While delving into the humor of different cultures throughout history, one might stumble upon a delightful surprise: Egyptian humor. It's fascinating to explore the jokes and wordplay that people found amusing thousands of years ago.
Finding authentic ancient Egyptian jokes can be a challenge. Search results often lead to modern jokes about ancient Egypt, such as those about mummies and pyramids. However, ancient Egyptians themselves had a unique sense of humor, often expressed through puns and visual wordplay.
Visual Puns in Hieroglyphs
Ancient Egyptians loved their puns and visual spelling jokes. It was pretty easy to make them with the Egyptian hieroglyphic languages. One example is the word imy-ra, meaning "overseer." It is commonly written with the owl and the mouth hieroglyphs:
The literal meaning of the title is "He who is in the mouth". The pun comes into play because imy-ra was sometimes written with a single hieroglyph: the tongue.
The tongue is situated in the mouth, creating a visual pun. The Egyptians played with their language in clever ways.

Here’s another way to look at it:
This is already a shortened spelling of both words that made up this title: “imy” being a nisbe meaning “he who is in”, and “ra” being a noun meaning “mouth”. The literal meaning of the title is “He who is in the mouth.”
Crocodile Hymn
Another example is the Crocodile Hymn, found in the Temple of Esna. The Crocodile Hymn is a full grammatical text using only crocodile hieroglyphs (with a few exceptions) to write down an entire hymn.
In poetry, determinatives were sometimes changed for certain words to add a layer of metaphor. Egyptians, like all humans throughout history, did love to play with their language.
Onomatopoeia in the Egyptian Language
It is believed that (Middle) Egyptian does have onomatopoeia, mostly in the realm of animal sounds. There is, of course, the difficulty that we can’t be sure how the hieroglyphic languages were actually pronounced. So are we completely certain that “hacking cough” actually was an onomatopoeia? No. But it is, at any rate, a known aspect of the language.

The Egyptian word for cat was miw, Egyptological pronunciation ‘miu’, commonly Westernised as “mau”. The word for donkey was aA, (glottal stop followed by an aleph), approximately pronounced as ‘uh-aah’, which is likely an onomatopoeia as well. My personal favourites that could be onomatopoeia are “to waddle” (e.g. like a goose): HbAbA (‘hebaba’) and “to cheer”; ajaj (’ay ay’).
