Job Opportunities at the American Embassy in Ethiopia

Available Positions

One of the key positions currently advertised is within the Department of Agriculture (USDA) Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS). This role involves working in Ethiopia and other countries in the Horn of Africa, such as Djibouti, Eritrea, Sudan, South Sudan, and Somalia.

Responsibilities:

  • Resolving trade complaints.
  • Addressing issues of non-compliance with host country import regulations.
  • Administering market development programs.
  • Maintaining professional relationships with host country government agencies and industries.

Qualifications:

  1. Education: A Bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Economics, Food and Agricultural Marketing, Agriculture, Agribusiness, International Trade, or Public Policy is required.
  2. Experience: A minimum of four years of work experience in one or more fields of agricultural economics, agricultural policy, commodity trade, and marketing analysis/research that includes extensive analysis and report writing on complex subjects.

Important Information for Applicants

Salary: For Locally Employed Staff, salary will be paid in local currency using the established exchange rate.

Appointment Duration: The appointment is indefinite, subject to successful completion of the probationary period.

Hiring Preferences

A hiring preference is extended to eligible and qualified applicants. Veterans must submit a copy of their most recent DD-214 (“Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty”), preferably Member Copy 4, a letter from Veterans’ Affairs which indicates the present existence of a service-connected disability, equivalent documentation, or certification.

A “certification” is any written document from the armed forces that certifies the service member is expected to be discharged or released from active duty service in the armed forces under honorable conditions within 120 days after the certification is submitted by the applicant.

Current employees who used a hiring preference to gain employment and are within their first 90 calendar days of employment are not eligible.

Additional Opportunities for Family Members

The Department of State is implementing the President’s July 7, 2025, Extension of Hiring Freeze, but as of July 15, 2025, EFM positions in missions overseas have been exempted from the hiring freeze.

The Consular Affairs-Appointment Eligible Family Member (CA-AEFM) Consular Program offers opportunities for family members to fill entry-level Consular officer positions at select posts. Family members may enroll in employment classes at the National Foreign Affairs Training Center’s (NFATC) Transition Center (TC) before going overseas.
