African Herbs for Sexual Enhancement: Exploring Traditional Remedies

Libido, or sexual desire, is influenced by various internal and external factors, including hormone levels, medications, and sleep habits. While everyone's libido differs, a decline with age is common. Natural approaches can improve libido and sexual performance through diet, exercise, and stress management. Consulting a healthcare professional is advisable, even when pursuing natural methods, to identify underlying conditions affecting sexual health.

Natural Ways to Boost Libido

Several natural methods can help increase libido, including consuming foods with aphrodisiac properties, reducing stress, and fostering intimacy with a partner. In some cases, medical treatment or therapy may be beneficial.

Foods with Aphrodisiac Properties

While limited evidence supports the effectiveness of specific foods, experimenting with them is generally safe. These foods often provide essential vitamins and minerals that enhance blood flow to the genitals and support a healthy sex life.

  • Chocolate: Throughout history, chocolate has symbolized desire due to its delicious taste and ability to enhance sexual pleasure. It promotes the release of serotonin, which can produce mood-lifting and aphrodisiac effects. Serotonin may also regulate blood flow to genital tissues, contributing to its libido-boosting properties.
  • Basil and Garlic: Incorporating basil or garlic into a romantic dinner can stimulate the senses. Basil's aroma stimulates the senses, while garlic contains allicin, a vasodilator that increases blood flow. These effects may potentially aid individuals with erectile dysfunction (ED).

Stress Management

Stress can significantly impact libido, regardless of overall health. Research suggests women may be particularly vulnerable to stress's effects on their sex lives, while men might use sex to alleviate stress. These differing approaches can sometimes cause conflict and increase stress between partners.

Building Intimacy

Emotional closeness is crucial for many people's sexual desire. Unresolved conflicts can negatively affect a sexual relationship. Communication is essential for building trust and preventing resentment from accumulating. After arguing with a partner, it’s unlikely that one would be in the mood to have sex.

Specific African Herbs and Their Potential Benefits

Yohimbe

Yohimbe is a tree native to western and central Africa. It contains a compound known as yohimbine, which has gained attention as a potential ED remedy. However, studies on this compound have had mixed results. A 2021 review of five previous studies found that yohimbine alone did not produce a significant improvement in ED symptoms but may do so in combination with other ED treatments.

One of the main risks of yohimbe is that the amount of yohimbine in over-the-counter products is often unclear. Some products may contain very little, while others may contain a lot. Due to this uncertainty, yohimbe is not available for sale in many countries.

Potential risks reported in the past include: rapid heartbeat, high blood pressure, anxiety, and digestive symptoms. Yohimbe also has associations with seizures and heart attacks and may interact with drugs - particularly a type of antidepressant known as monoamine oxidase inhibitors. A person should not take yohimbine without consulting a doctor first.

Other Herbs

In western Uganda, traditional medical practitioners use several medicinal plants to treat ED and sexual impotence. A study documented 33 medicinal plants, both cultivated and wild-harvested, belonging to 25 families and 30 genera. The family Rubiaceae is the most represented, followed by Alliaceae, Euphorbiaceae, Mimosaceae, Papilionaceae, and Caesalpinaceae. Common methods of preparation include boiling, chewing, pounding, cooking, roasting, and smoking.

Some frequently utilized plants include Citropsis articulata, Cannabis sativa, Cleome gynandra, and Cola acuminata. Plants like Cleome gynandra are popular vegetables sold in markets, while others like Allium cepa (onions), Allium sativum (garlic), Rhus vulgaris, Capsicum frutescens (red pepper), and Zingiber officinale (ginger) are also widely available.

The roots of Mondia whiteii are used as an aphrodisiac for males and to improve female sexuality in many areas of Uganda. The patented ‘Mulondo Wine,’ flavored by Mondia whiteii roots, has gained national and international recognition.

Other Herbs and Supplements to Consider

Red Ginseng

Red ginseng is an herb that practitioners of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) promote for its ability to treat ED. Other names for this herb include Panax ginseng or Korean ginseng.A 2021 review of previous research found “promising” evidence supporting the use of red ginseng for ED. There is some evidence it may increase testosterone, and animal studies have shown it increases nitric oxide, which opens up blood vessels.

The most common side effect is insomnia. Other potential adverse effects include: rapid heartbeat, nervousness, headaches, dry mouth, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea, high or low blood pressure, changes in blood sugar, loss of appetite, drug interactions, including with statins and antidepressants.

Horny Goat Weed

Horny goat weed is another herb people use in TCM for ED. It is also known as Epimedium sagittatum. Although this herb has a long history of use as an aphrodisiac, a 2020 article states that there have been no trials of horny goat weed as an ED treatment in humans.According to a 2020 review, the animal studies to date suggest horny goat weed may increase levels of nitric oxide in rats. This could be due to a compound the plant contains, which is known as icariin.

Some of the potential adverse effects of horny goat weed include: sweating, feeling hot, mood changes, and drug interactions. This herb can also cause a fast, irregular heartbeat, or arrhythmia, which could be dangerous in some cases. People with heart disease should not take horny goat weed.

Maritime Pine

Maritime pine, or Pinus pinaster, is an herbal extract from a tree native to southwest France. It contains procyanidins, which have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Procyanidins may also increase nitric oxide and stimulate the production of catecholamines, which are hormones involved in erections. Examples include epinephrine, norepinephrine, and dopamine.

In previous research on maritime pine, people reported symptoms such as: headaches digestive symptoms, such as nausea and diarrhea, hives, eczema, dizziness, mouth ulcers, nosebleeds and bruising.

L-Arginine

While not an herb, l-arginine is a dietary supplement that may have the potential to reduce ED. It is an amino acid, or one of the building blocks of protein, and a precursor to nitric oxide. In high enough doses, l-arginine can stimulate the blood vessels to enlarge, allowing for better blood flow.

Side effects of taking l-arginine can include: upset stomach, bloating, cramping and diarrhea. There are also concerns that amino acid supplementation may damage the kidneys over time. A 2020 animal study found that l-arginine accelerated the decline in kidney function in mice as they aged.

Important Considerations

The effectiveness of aphrodisiacs can vary from person to person. Factors such as age, overall health, and lifestyle can influence their impact. Before using any aphrodisiac, consider your individual needs and health conditions. Research different options and consult with a healthcare professional, especially if you are taking other medications or have existing health issues.

It is generally not recommended to combine aphrodisiacs with alcohol, as alcohol can impair judgment, lessen sexual desire, and interfere with their effectiveness. Store all aphrodisiacs in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight in tightly sealed containers to maintain their potency.

Addressing Erectile Dysfunction

Getting an erection requires sensory stimulation, increased blood flow, increased blood pressure in the penis, and muscle contraction. ED can occur if this process is disrupted at any stage due to factors like stress, performance anxiety, depression, atherosclerosis, chronic kidney disease, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular conditions, neurological conditions, injury, or certain medications.

Speaking with a health professional allows them to investigate the potential cause. It can also give people the opportunity to ask whether a particular herb or supplement is right for them.

If a health professional says it is OK to try a herbal remedy, be sure to purchase from a reputable brand that conducts third-party testing to ensure its products are pure and do not contain any unlisted ingredients. If adverse effects occur, stop taking the product right away and notify a doctor.

Herbs with Questionable Effectiveness

Many male libido treatments containing medicinal herbs that are supposed to “get you hard” may not live up to expectations and aren’t exactly supported by the research that’s been conducted so far.

Of the herbs for ED on the market today, the following popular herbal medicines get the most attention:

  • Ashwagandha
  • Maca
  • Yohimbe
  • Ginseng
  • Cordyceps
  • Ginkgo

Ashwagandha, allegedly eases anxiety and stress. Yet, when it comes to getting it up, there is limited research on this herb’s effect on psychogenic erectile dysfunction, which is ED with psychological causes, like those related to stress, anxiety, and pressure surrounding sex.

Despite its cult following, there hasn’t been proper, objective research into the effects of maca on ED, and there is nothing mentioned about Moon Juice’s Sex Dust in the medical literature. The research we did find, including a systematic review from 2010, suggested that there’s limited proof maca can do much of anything for your libido or erection quality.

Like most herbal ED supplements on the market, the science supporting Yohimbe's efficacy as an ED treatment is minimal.

While ginseng for ED (sometimes called panax ginseng) may have one of the most compelling cases, it’s still not quite measuring up as far as we’re concerned.

We were hard-pressed to find hard evidence that ginkgo biloba could help with ED.

Despite the mushrooms’ popularity, there has been limited research on cordyceps’ medical potential. There’s just not enough evidence to support the idea that cordyceps can replace drugs like sildenafil that have been scientifically proven to help blood flow to the penis.

Alternative Treatments for ED

Herbs may not present much of a time-tested, FDA-approved option for managing the symptoms of ED, but there are a number of other options that have decades of research to support their effectiveness. A healthcare provider might prescribe you a PDE5 inhibitor like Cialis® (tadalafil), Stendra® (avanafil), or Viagra® (sildenafil). These medications increase blood flow to your penis, so it’s more likely that you will get and maintain an erection when you get aroused.

Besides medication, sexual function and sexual performance may benefit from two other natural treatment options - talking and taking care of yourself. They can help address existing risk factors for ED, like a sedentary lifestyle and poor diet, as well as depression and anxiety (especially the performance kind).

To treat erectile dysfunction, you may want and need to investigate the holistic options, but unlike a packet of dried herbs, therapy and lifestyle changes are the ones you should trust.

Avoiding ED Herbal Supplement Scams

Here are some tips for avoiding ED herbal supplement scams:

  • Research and corroborate information. Be wary of anything that isn’t backed by scientific consensus and strong research, especially clinical trials.
  • Consult with a healthcare provider. Healthcare professionals can give you honest advice about what you should put in your body and won’t try to sell you a lifestyle.
  • Know you’re not alone. As many as 30 million American men have ED.

While supplements for ED are good at the sales pitch, they’re not so great when it comes to evidence. There are more reliable and scientifically tested methods available.
