Honoring Black Fatherhood: Traditions and Celebrations on Father's Day

This week, we are celebrating two important holidays: Father’s Day and Juneteenth. On Sunday, June 18th, we honor fathers, step-fathers, and father figures of all kinds! On Father’s Day, we acknowledge how special dads are by showing love and appreciation. Our fathers create a blueprint for our relationships in the future.

As we approach Father’s Day, it’s essential to pause and recognize the immense role Black Fathers play in their families and communities. Historically, Black Fathers have been the backbone of our communities, fostering strength and resilience. They have passed down traditions and lessons, often fighting against systemic injustices to secure a better future for their children.

Despite these inspiring figures, it is no secret that being a Black Father comes with its own set of unique challenges. Society often paints a monolithic picture of Black fatherhood that overlooks the diversity and complexity of their experiences. These men grapple with systemic racism, economic inequality, and high incarceration rates, making their journey to effective fatherhood harder yet extraordinarily meaningful.

The story of African American fathers and father-figures exemplifies the ways in which individuals embraced the challenge of fatherhood as they struggled to keep their families together and to help them thrive, educationally and materially. To support themselves and their families, African American fathers forged careers and performed work that helped fuel the nation’s economy and contribute to social and political progress.

They were educators, administrators, military servicemen, religious leaders, entrepreneurs, factory and construction workers, and more. Some crafted nontraditional careers as doctors, lawyers and engineers. But no matter their livelihood, fathers were solidly present to witness milestones in their children’s lives-from taking first steps to graduating from high school and college. They were consistently present to provide advice, instill discipline and share lessons learned. Although wrought with extraordinary systemic challenges, this strong tradition of fatherhood and parenting continues in many African American families today.

This photo album represents another way the museum is dedicated to documenting that specific tradition and the history and culture of African American family life in general. The photographs in the album depict members of the NMAAHC family, who share their vivid memories of times well spent with their fathers and of precious times as fathers themselves. For those who contributed to the album, the photographs represent varied images that trigger moments of joy and celebration, meaningful moments from the past and the present.

So, for the fathers and father-figures, who remained physically and emotionally present and even for those who were lost somehow, somewhere along the way, we remember them and cherish the best of times. And we recognize and pay tribute to the proud staff fathers, who shared wonderfully engaging photographs of themselves with their beloved children.

Examples of Admirable African American Fathers

The esteemed civil rights leader, Martin Luther King Jr., was not only an iconic figure in American history but also a loving father. James Earl Jones, the acclaimed actor and voice of Mufasa in “The Lion King,” also stands as a remarkable example. Jones, who grew up without his own father present, decided to break the cycle and be an actively involved father to his son.

Personal Tributes

Here are some personal tributes to fathers from members of the NMAAHC family:

  • William Thomas Newman "Daddy" was the best. Protector, provider, instructor, cheerleader, rescuer, counselor and confidant.
  • My pops, sharing the same birthday month, he is the greatest man I know - who taught me everything from how to drive to how to cook. So much so, I made spaghetti for my first real meal and he has made that my nickname!
  • Wishing A Happy Father’s Day to the true “Mayor” of Salisbury, MD (lol), My Daddy, Mr. Make-It-Happen! It doesn’t matter where I go, if I come home for the weekend and someone sees me out in Salisbury the first thing they’ll ask is if “I’m JoJo’s daughter.” That puts a smile on my face. I love you dearly. As I get older I see my best parts from you. It never ceases to amaze me the lengths you’ll go to protect your family and provide for us. Whether it’s a joke, a breakout in dance or song, or when we’re making too much noise lol I thank the Lord for your continued growth and love. You are a great man, wonderful father and outstanding pop pop!
  • Happy Father's Day to Dr. Michael Edwards-the incredible father of the Fantastic Four!
  • Brian Fisher, NMAAHC Safety Coordinator, is the best dad anyone could ask for! Thank you for always giving me sound wisdom and knowledge. Thank you for making sure I was always taken care of. Thank you for your service to our country, and thank you for being my daddy. I love you.
  • To Fredrick Hunter, thank you for being a model of compassion, hard work and sacrifice with a dash of humor and a hearty appreciation for music! You stand tall through it all - overcoming every storm with calm and leading our family with compassion, love and strength.
  • Happy Father's Day to my birthday buddy and personal hero, Colonel Nate McGee. You truly are the best dad a girl could ever have! You guide our family through life's challenges with a steady arm yet a gentle approach. Always present, never wavering. Loving us with every fiber of you until we burst at the seams with joy. We salute you.
  • On Father's Day, I remember my beloved father Edward Theodore Taylor, an educator and Korean War veteran, who cherished, more than anything, being a father to his three children. As someone who had lived through much of the history documented in our exhibitions, my father was so proud of the museum and its mission. During one of our grand opening events , my father said he wanted to meet the fierce leader of this museum, so I made it happen! Four years later, my Dad passed away, but I think of him every day and treasure moments like the one captured in this photo of Lonnie Bunch, my father, and me.
  • Happy First Father’s Day to my little brother, Dane. Thank you and Jessica for bringing Reece into this world and into our lives.
  • Happy Father’s Day to a strong man who taught me how to ride a bike, to be smart and think for myself, and raised me to be a strong and uncompromising woman.
  • Dedicated to my younger brother giving birth to his daughter. Nothing can break a bond between a father and daughter.
  • My dad has always represented strength and growth in our family. He shows us constantly what it means to have one's back and being supportive in any situation.
  • Happy Father's Day to all the wonderful dads! I'm fortunate to have a great father who instilled in me the value of hard work and patience.

Juneteenth: A Time for Reflection and Celebration

Juneteenth is also called Jubilee Day, Freedom Day, or Emancipation Day to celebrate the freedom of enslaved African Americans in 1865. Now a federal holiday in the United States, there are many ways you and your family can celebrate.

Lessons about Juneteenth need to recognize the challenges faced by the African American community and how these challenges are still continuing in today’s society. However, these lessons should help students find empowerment in the celebration of Juneteenth and teach activism.

Honoring Mentors and Father Figures

Today, we want to extend our gratitude to the hardworking Black Fathers within our own community. Their tireless dedication to their families and the values they instill in their children do not go unnoticed. Moreover, we want to celebrate the mentors in our community who may not be fathers themselves but step up to guide young men who lack father figures in their lives. Their invaluable contribution, investing time, energy, and love, has a lasting impact on these young men’s lives, inspiring them to aim high and succeed.

In conclusion, Father’s Day is not just a celebration for those who are biological fathers, but a day to honor all men who have assumed the commendable role of a father figure. To the Black Fathers and mentors in Memphis and beyond, we salute you. Thank you for your strength, resilience, and unconditional love. Thank you for being the pillars of our community.
