Early Career

Martinez had been attending shows by Big Time Wrestling, a professional wrestling promotion in Northern California, since the age of 11. In April 2008, she started her professional wrestling career at the age of 18, by attending Big Time Wrestling's training classes by her head trainer Jason Styles. This was one of the reasons why Martinez considered Big Time Wrestling as her home promotion. She had her first match in September 2008.

On the American independent circuit, Martinez wrestled under the ring name Davina Rose. From 2008 to 2012, she wrestled for Big Time Wrestling. In October 2010, Rose first met her mentor Serena when they teamed together for a tag team match.

In October 2011, Rose made her debut for Shimmer Women Athletes at the tapings of Shimmer Volume 41-44, becoming embroiled in Serena's feud with the Canadian Ninjas (Portia Perez and Nicole Matthews). At the tapings, Rose lost all four matches wrestled including her debut match to Mercedes Martinez.

WWE Career

In December 2012, it was reported that Martinez had signed with WWE. In late January 2013, Martinez made her debut for WWE's developmental territory NXT at a live event, wrestling under a mask. She then adopted the ring name Bayley and made her NXT television debut in a loss to Paige on the March 20 episode.

When she turned 18, Bayley started to train for the squared circle, and after learning the ropes on the indies, she joined NXT’s burgeoning Women’s division in 2012. Unlike her contemporaries, she didn’t mirror Charlotte’s confidence, Sasha Banks’ swagger or Becky Lynch’s toughness.

On June 12, Bayley adopted a new character of a doe-eyed fangirl, then lost to Alicia Fox in the first round of the NXT Women's Championship tournament to crown the inaugural champion. Bayley got her first win, by teaming with Charlotte against Alicia Fox and Aksana on September 4.

To Charlotte's annoyance, The Beautiful Fierce Females (BFFs; Sasha Banks and Summer Rae), attempted to convince Bayley to join them, however, on November 13, Charlotte attacked Bayley during their match against the BFFs and promptly joined the BFFs instead. Bayley then formed a brief alliance with main roster Diva Natalya, defeating Sasha Banks in both tag team and singles matches.

On May 1, 2014, Bayley failed to advance in a tournament for the vacant NXT Women's Championship after losing to Banks in the first round. After pinning Charlotte in a tag team match, Bayley defeated Sasha Banks to become the number one contender to Charlotte's NXT Women's Championship, but she was unsuccessful in capturing the title at NXT TakeOver: Fatal 4-Way, and in a rematch that took place on October 2.

In mid-October, after losing to Banks, Bayley was attacked by her former friend Becky Lynch, who allied with Banks, and Bayley later formed an alliance with former rival Charlotte to feud with Banks and Lynch throughout the following several weeks.

On the November 27 episode of NXT, Bayley was attacked by Banks and Lynch, injuring her knee in the storyline. She returned on the January 21, 2015 episode of NXT, saving Charlotte from an attack by Banks and Lynch, before reluctantly attacking Charlotte herself.

In March, Bayley began a feud with Emma after she criticized Bayley for her niceness and claimed that it had prevented her from winning the NXT Women's Championship. This led to a match between the two on the April 1 episode of NXT, which Bayley won.

On the April 29 episode of NXT, Bayley was defeated by Dana Brooke after a distraction by Emma. Bayley would gain revenge on Emma the following week, where she would attack her after Emma's loss to Charlotte in a match. At NXT TakeOver: Unstoppable on May 20, Bayley teamed up with Charlotte to defeat Emma and Dana Brooke.

On the May 27 episode of NXT, Bayley was defeated by Emma, and after the match she and Charlotte were attacked by Emma and Dana Brooke. Bayley alongside Becky Lynch, Charlotte and Sasha Banks made their main roster debuts on the May 18, 2015 episode of Raw.

She quickly inspired young ladies to wear side ponytails and grown men to embrace hugs, engaging in classic showdowns against the likes of Asuka and Nia Jax and making history in NXT by competing in the first 30-minute WWE Iron Man Match featuring two female competitors, defeating Banks to retain the NXT Women’s Championship and setting a new standard for the Women’s divisions in both NXT and WWE.

Martinez signed with WWE in 2012 and was assigned to the NXT brand, where she adopted the ring name Bayley. In 2015, she won the NXT Women's Championship.

After a successful run as NXT Women’s Champion Bayley debuted on the main roster in 2016 and won the Raw Women’s Championship shortly after. Debuting on the main roster in 2016, Bayley achieved a lifelong dream when she defeated Charlotte to win her first Raw Women's Championship.

On the main roster, she has held the WWE (Raw) Women's Championship twice, the WWE SmackDown Women's Championship twice, and the WWE Women's Tag Team Championship twice with Sasha Banks, of which they were the inaugural holders, making her the first women's Triple Crown Champion and Grand Slam winner in WWE history.

Her inaugural WWE Women's Tag Team Championship reign with Banks came by way of winning the Elimination Chamber match in 2019. Additionally, she won the 2019 Money in the Bank ladder match and the 2024 Royal Rumble, where she set a women's record for the latter of 1 hour and 3 minutes (this was broken by Roxanne Perez in 2025).

Two years later, she made history alongside Sasha Banks when they became the first WWE Women's Tag Team Champions by capturing the titles in an Elimination Chamber Match - the first of two reigns with the coveted titles - and even won the Money in the Bank Ladder Match in 2019 that led to her first SmackDown Women's Title.

Character Transformation

When beginning her WWE career, Bayley was depicted as a "hugger", coming out with multiple inflatable skydancers during her entrances as well as hugging many fans (particularly younger children) in attendance. For the first month as a villain, she was depicted as a hypocrite, acting as nothing had changed with her entrance music and in-ring gear remaining intact, despite developing villainous traits and underhanded tactics.

In October 2019, Bayley emerged for her entrance with a cold new look in her eyes, produced an ax and slashed her beloved Bayley buddies to bits. On October 11, 2019, Bayley debuted a new look, having cut her ponytail off, destroying her inflatable tube men, and using profanity against the fans in her post-match promo.

At SummerSlam, Bayley reemerged alongside Dakota Kai and IYO SKY to stand defiantly in the face of Raw Women's Champion Bianca Belair and Becky Lynch.

Damage CTRL and Royal Rumble Victory

As part of the 2023 WWE Draft, Bayley, along with stablemates Kai and Sky, was drafted to the SmackDown brand. On the May 12 episode of SmackDown, Kai and Bayley failed to win the WWE Women's Tag Team Championship from Morgan and Raquel Rodriguez.

After Morgan and Rodriguez vacated the titles due to Morgan suffering an injury, Bayley and Sky participated in a fatal four-way match for the vacant titles on the May 29 episode of Raw, but the match was won by Ronda Rousey and Shayna Baszler. At Money in the Bank on July 1, Bayley took part in the women's Money in the Bank ladder match. She pushed Sky, who also participated in the match, off the ladder when Sky was trying to grab the briefcase. Bayley was later handcuffed to Lynch by Sky to grab the briefcase and win the match.

Nevertheless, Bayley helped Sky cash in her Money in the Bank briefcase to win the WWE Women's Championship at SummerSlam. Over the next few months, she helped Sky retain her title on several occasions while Asuka and Kairi Sane joined Damage CTRL.

Despite winning the Royal Rumble, she was soon betrayed by her friends in Damage CTRL, who kicked her out the group. On January 27, 2024, at Royal Rumble, Bayley entered the women's Royal Rumble match at number 3 and won by last eliminating Liv Morgan. She also set a new record for the longest time spent in a single women's Royal Rumble match at 1:03:03, beating Rhea Ripley's record from the previous year. Bayley also became the second woman, after Asuka, to win the Royal Rumble, Money in the Bank, and Elimination Chamber matches and one of five people overall.

On the February 2 episode of SmackDown, Bayley confronted Sky, Sane and Asuka for talking about her behind her back before being attacked by Sane and Asuka, kicking her out of the group.

Bayley won the WWE Women's Championship at WrestleMania XL.
