Why Choose a Wilderness Safari in Zambia?

Wilderness Safaris has been pioneering ecotourism in Zambia since 2000. Their current presence in both the Busanga Plains in Kafue National Park (KNP) and at Toka Leya in Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park plays a crucial role in the preservation and monitoring of the country’s wildlife, wilderness, and its people. Our destinations are vast, remote, and untamed, and represent true wilderness.

With Wilderness you’ll walk, boat, barge, float, fly, drive, ride, trek, track and discover a world of adventures. Our custom-designed journeys are intended to inspire and can be tailor made to suit your every need. Travelling is about more than the places you visit and the things you’ll see. It’s about people, culture, wildlife, history, and experiencing something you’ve never done before.

We operate in 8 African countries, with 60+ camps promising exclusive, private, wild game viewing, unrivalled style & comfort, & a range of activities for a full immersion in nature and local culture.

Impact and Conservation Efforts

Busanga Bush Camp and Shumba are located in the Busanga Plains and contribute to the conservation of 2.4 million hectares of wilderness in Kafue National Park, as well as the protection of 19 Vulnerable and Endangered species. Through funding from WWT, Wilderness Safaris also provides support to various conservation initiatives, further strengthening its unwavering commitment to responsible ecotourism. Casual labourers are also sourced locally during construction periods.

Experiences and Activities

A safari in Zambia will see you travel from Livingstone, the country’s adventure capital where the Zambezi and Victoria Falls - or Mosi-oa-Tunya - provide endless thrills, to the exceptionally remote Busanga Plains in northern Kafue National Park. Exploring the diverse ecosystem here on foot allows you to interact with African wildlife in a way that’s impossible from a vehicle-tracking lion and leopard with an expert guide and feeling the earth rumble as waterbuck and impala leap through the bush.

Here are some testimonials:

  • "This is my 3rd trip with Wilderness and to their camps in Africa. Each trip just gets better. The attention to detail in each camp is superior beyond words. The food, the settings, the guides, the staff .... everything and everyone is incredible."
  • "Nelson our travel agent put together the perfect honeymoon in Tanzania - which included a combination of safari and Zanzibar beach holiday. Communication and planning in the run up went well, he quickly understood what we were looking for and provided a clear, comprehensive quote, meeting all our desires for the trip."
  • "I first contacted Wilderness only wanting a suggestion for a safari camp in a more secluded spot in Kenya- thinking we could book something ourselves directly with a camp. I was blown away by how knowledgeable and helpful Angela was in being able to curate a safari experience (with all camps in Kenya, not just Wilderness camps) that was exactly what we wanted."

Memories from the Zambia Walking Safari will last a lifetime for me. The wildlife, the terrain, the staff, the accommodations, and our guide Jason Alfonsi were all tremendous. I guess the best way to describe my experience is that I can’t wait to return. I had a superb trip-not only the itinerary, locations, and experiences, but the staff at all venues were truly outstanding. Every aspect of the trip was fantastic.

I particularly enjoyed the walking part of the safari, which really gives you a taste of life in the African bush. Having experienced many 4WD game drives, I have to admit that I’ve become a walking safari fan. Fabulous trip.

Our journeys change lives. Not just yours, but also those of our staff, communities, and the ecosystems we impact.
