In May, average daytime temperatures range from 24 to 35 degrees Celsius (75.2 to 95 degrees Fahrenheit). While June is Egypt’s first summer month, the weather in May is not really as bad or as hot as many people tend to believe.

The great thing about visiting Egypt in May is that the crowds start shrinking dramatically due to the heat. What's more, the prices drop as many hotels and airlines offer "end of season" deals. As mentioned previously, most tourists have already returned to their home countries. As a result, you won’t find massive crowds of tourists at major archaeological attractions.

Very occasionally, the Khamsin wind causes sandstorms to sweep across Egypt. However, March is the month of sandstorms in Egypt, rather than May. It’s important to note that between March and May, the Khamsin Wind tends to bring thick dust and sandstorms, so if you’re exploring the Giza Pyramid Complex or sprawling deserts of Egypt during this season, be sure to bring a bandana or something to cover your face.

Daily high temperatures increase by 6°F, from 87°F to 93°F, rarely falling below 78°F or exceeding 102°F. Daily low temperatures increase by 6°F, from 64°F to 70°F, rarely falling below 59°F or exceeding 74°F.

Temperatures in the north of the country, Alexandria and Cairo, are lower than the rest of the country, hovering between a low of 17°C (62°F) and a high of 33°C (91°F).

Cairo: Expect mild-to-hot weather, with average highs around 93°F in summer and 64°F in winter.
Alexandria: Situated on the Mediterranean coast, Alexandria enjoys more pleasant temperatures with sea breezes, but be aware of the khamaseen.
Aswan: Along with Luxor, Aswan experiences some of the hottest temperatures in Egypt, with a hot desert climate.
Hurghada: This resort town on the east coast has sunshine year-round, with ideal times to visit in early autumn and late spring.
Luxor and Abu Simbel: Farther south, it's much hotter. Luxor highs hover around 98°F to 106°F while Abu Simbel sees daytime temperatures of 100*F to 104°F. As you travel south to Luxor and beyond, the heat reaches consistent triple digits during the daytime and it can be difficult to enjoy the historical sites.

May is a good time to visit seaside destinations. The best places to visit in Egypt in May are undoubtedly the Red Sea coastal towns along the Sinai Peninsula. These include the upscale resort towns like Sharm el-Sheikh and Hurghada, as well as more laid-back destinations such as Dahab.

Alexandria and Cairo are also considerably cooler than regions farther south or west. Alexandria sits on the coast in the far north, staying pleasant throughout May, and the capital is still tolerable, even with the increasing temperatures.

Dress Code: In May, with higher temperatures, we recommend wearing light clothing made of linen or cotton in lighter colors. It's best to carry a hat and sunscreen, as well as sunglasses if you use those. Women will still be expected to cover their knees and shoulders, as is common in Egyptian tradition.
