The Toyota Sienta is a compact minivan that combines practicality, style, and functionality. Introduced first in 2003, the Sienta has evolved over three generations, constantly adapting to meet the needs of its users. This model offers their attractive design, and friendly features. However, Toyota sienta is popular for their efficiency of fuel which is a very effective selection.

The Toyota Sienta, introduced in 2003, is a popular compact MPV (Multi-Purpose Vehicle) designed primarily for the Japanese market. As of 2022, it is positioned below the Noah/Voxy and above the Roomy in Toyota's MPV lineup in Japan. The Sienta is sold in Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Indonesia, Taiwan, Laos, and Thailand.

In Indonesia and Thailand, it serves as an upmarket alternative to the Avanza and fills the gap between Avanza and the larger Innova. The first generation Sienta was introduced on 29 September 2003 in Japan, which is the only market it was sold in. The car can also be found in numerous other countries through parallel imports.

In 2015, the Sienta underwent a major redesign, adding a more dynamic exterior and improved safety features. It continued to evolve, with hybrid options introduced in 2018 to enhance fuel efficiency. In 2022, Toyota redesigned the third-generation Sienta .

The Toyota Sienta (Japanese: トヨタ・シエンタ, Hepburn: Toyota Shienta) is a mini MPV with sliding doors manufactured by Toyota. It was introduced in September 2003, based on the Vitz/Yaris subcompact car, and is available at all Toyota dealerships in Japan.

Generations of Toyota Sienta

Each generation of the Sienta has provided solid support for family life by remaining consistently close to Japanese families and carrying a deep understanding of changing customer values from the very first generation.

First Generation (2003)

The first generation of the Toyota Sienta was launched in 2003. It was introduced as a compact minivan, targeting young families in urban areas. During this phase, the Sienta was known for its boxy shape and distinctive front design.

It also included the innovative “G-Book” subscription telematics service, which offered users navigation and emergency support. The Sienta received a facelift on 16 May 2006, three years after its introduction. The grille was given a transverse bar and the taillights were redesigned, with three ribbons and a round element rather than the original design's eight ribbons.

New colours were added, such as Apple Green, Gun-Metal Grey, and Metallic Blue. Another upgrade found on the facelifted models is double electric-powered sliding doors. Powered by a 1.5 L VVT-i petrol engine capable of 110 PS (81 kW) at 6,000 rpm, the Sienta comes equipped with CVT.

Toyota temporarily stopped selling the Sienta in the third quarter of 2010 as sales had slowed and it was to have been replaced by the new Toyota Passo Sette. As the Passo Sette proved not to be particularly successful, Toyota listened to the demands of their customers and sales of the Sienta resumed in May 2011.

The reintroduced model did not feature any significant changes aside from renamed trim levels and a new, sportier model, the Sienta Dice (stylised as "DICE"), with a different design with squared off headlights. The taillights were also redesigned, removing the circular element.

Second Generation (2015)

The second generation Toyota Sienta was introduced in 2015 and marked a significant shift in design and technology. It adopted a more rounded, modern look with improved aerodynamics. The new Sienta was built on the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) platform, which enhanced its stability and driving comfort.

It offered more safety features like the Toyota Safety Sense suite, including collision avoidance systems and lane departure alerts. The second generation Sienta debuted on 9 July 2015. The minivan offers three interior layouts: 7-seater, 6-seater, and 5-seater (for wheelchair users). Interior space has been increased in all areas compared to the previous generation model.

There is also a hybrid variant, which returns 27.2 km/L (77 mpg‑imp; 64 mpg‑US) under the Japanese JC08 cycle test, making it eligible for eco-car subsidies and tax incentives. The non-hybrid Sienta returns 20.6 km/L (58 mpg‑imp; 48 mpg‑US) in FWD configuration.

The second generation Sienta was launched at the 24th Indonesia International Motor Show on 7 April 2016. Production of the Indonesian-spec Sienta at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indonesia plant in Karawang, West Java began in late June 2016 and sales began on 26 July 2016. Initial trim levels were E, G, V, and Q (equipped with body kits).

To meet the standard geological conditions in Indonesia, it is 20 mm (1 in) higher than the Japanese market Sienta. The shift knob location also moved to the floor to accommodate the 6-speed manual transmission, as well as the grip handbrake. Some visual differences as compared to the units sold in Japan were that it does not feature the “Sienta” badging embossed on the tailgate handle, instead, the model badge name is on the tailgate itself, and an additional rear foglamp is featured center mounted on the rear bumper edge.

It uses a 2NR-FE 1.5-litre Dual VVT-i engine. The Malaysian-spec Sienta was launched on 17 August 2016, and is fully imported from Indonesia. The Sienta is available both from Borneo Motors (Toyota's authorised dealer in Singapore) and parallel import distributors since 2016.

The Sienta was introduced in Taiwan in October 2016 as the replacement of the Wish in the market. It is available with the 1.5-litre 2NR-FE engine and the 1.8-litre 2ZR-FAE engine with VSC, hill-start assists, and 2 airbags as standard features. It is manufactured in Guanyin, Taiwan, and it is produced and sold as a left-hand drive vehicle.

The Sienta is available in Thailand in two trim levels, 1.5 G and 1.5 V. The facelifted second-generation Sienta went on sale in Japan on 11 September 2018. The five-seater variant of the Sienta, called "Funbase", was added. The facelifted Southeast Asian market Sienta was launched in Thailand on 6 August 2019 and in Indonesia on 2 September 2019.

Unlike the Japanese market facelift, the changes are only applied to the grille and some parts of the interior.

Third Generation (2022)

The third-generation Toyota Sienta, released in 2022, introduced further refinements in both design and technology. The third-generation Sienta is ideal for tech-savvy drivers, with features such as an updated telematics system, digital dashboard, and options for a fully digital rearview mirror.

The development team once again considered customer feedback and tried to uncover their real hopes for the Sienta in developing this new model. The conclusion they reached was preserving the vehicle's easy-to-manage length, latest safety and security features, fuel economy, and affordable price while further refining the user-friendly cabin space preserved from the first generation.

The team has ensured a cabin space that seven adults can ride in without changing the length and width, making it a better companion that matches customer lifestyles. The second-row seats, where most passengers sit, have been re-designed to provide more spacious rear seat space for both legroom and head clearance.

In addition, the new Sienta adopts a revamped powertrain that achieves both fuel economy and driving performance through TNGA, as well as the latest safety and security features in support of family drives. The third-generation Sienta was launched in Japan on 23 August 2022.

Design and Interior

The Toyota Sienta is known for its distinct, compact shape, and modern design elements. The interior of the Toyota Sienta combines functionality with style. The platform that forms the vehicle's basic structure was newly designed based on the TNGA (GA-B) platform. The main structure is joined to form a ring-shaped frame, improving joint rigidity. Front and rear suspension geometry has been optimized to produce a rigid body.

Cabin height was increased by 20 mm from previous models while maintaining an easy-to-manage length and maneuverability. A maximum of 1,000 mm, or +80 mm compared to previous models, of class-leading front/rear couple distance has been achieved to improve second-row comfort.

While maintaining the popular low 330 mm floor height and stepless flat floor, the power sliding door opening height has been expanded to 1,200 mm, +60 mm compared to previous models, to make it easier to get in and out of rear seats.

They use the modern Light Emitting Diode (LED) technology, which helps drivers with visibility in the dark. Unlike SUVs, which have sharp headlights, the Toyota Sienta hybrid x minivan has round lights that give off a soft vibe.

The new 2025 Toyota Sienta Hybrid X comes in a color palette that ranges from all shades of white to all shades of black. It starts from Platinum White Pearl Mica and ends with Urban Khaki. The door handles and side mirrors match the body color, which gives the car a seamless look.

The 2025 Toyota Sienta X Hybrid MVP sits on four 15-inch wheels. This size is perfect for a compact minivan like the Sienta. These wheels are made of aluminium, which light metal. Aluminum is malleable, which is why it contributes to the car’s fuel efficiency and handling.

The 2025 Toyota Sienta X Hybrid X E Four is a seven-seater minivan. Meaning, it has three rows, each with a seating configuration of 2-3-2. The front row, as you can visualise, seats two (driver and front passenger). The middle row seats three people while the rear bench seats two people.

The dashboard of the 2025 Toyota Sienta X Hybrif X E-Four is very user-friendly and totally lives up to the Shikakumaru theme (circle and square). The dashboard is made of good-quality fabric, giving the car a homely feel. The lower part of the instrument panel has the controls, which makes it convenient for the driver.

The dashboard features a digital multi-information display (MID) that is exclusive to the X trim. It gives you all kinds of data that range from speed, fuel consumption, and hybrid status. In addition to the floor luggage space, the two-row five-seater model has expanded luggage space height by 50 mm compared to previous models, which was achieved by changing the tilt-down structure of the second-row seats to lower the height of the back of the seats when folded.

Toyota Safety Sense, the latest active safety package with advanced and improved functionality, is equipped as standard on all models.

Pre-collision Safety System: This system expands the detection range, adding motorcyclists (daytime), pedestrians, and cyclists to help avoid collisions or reduce damage.
Proactive Driving Assist: This system subtly assists drivers when driving on ordinary roads and in other situations.
Advanced Park: The new Sienta comes equipped with Advanced Park, a driving support technology function within Toyota Teammate. Software Updates: Software updates enable the vehicle to always have the latest software version via wireless communication or a dealer's wired connection. While also adding new functions that become available after vehicle purchase, the updates can enhance vehicle performance.
Connected Navigation: Equipped with Connected Navigation-compatible Display Audio system, enabling destination searches and route settings using new center-acquired data, including maps, facilities, and traffic congestion.
In-Vehicle Wi-Fi Hotspot: These new models also come with their own in-vehicle Wi-Fi hotspot, a first for Toyota.
Dash Cams: Equipped with front and rear dash cams. Video captured by the Toyota Safety Sense's monocular camera and the newly added rear-facing camera while driving is recorded to built-in memory.

Engine and Performance

The 1.5-liter Dynamic Force Engine (M15A-FXE) for the hybrid system improves system efficiency and achieves outstanding fuel efficiency. The new 2025 Toyota Sienta has a 1.5-liter 3-cylinder engine, which is a Dynamic Force Engine. It operates on a very efficient cycle, which is called the Atkinson cycle. Along with the cylinder engine is an advanced hybrid system. Both of these engines work together to provide a fuel-efficient drive.

Interestingly, both the engine and motor combine to give your MVP 90 horsepower, which is huge. Summing it up, the engine and motor operate on a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT). The Electric All Wheel Drive is the biggest selling point of this minivan. Unlike the conventional All Wheel Drive system, this E four system has a separate electric motor that drives the rear wheels only.

This system adds traction to the wheels, which contributes to the fuel efficiency. Now you can take your minivan up the mountains and even on slippery surfaces. The added traction makes your minivan safe for off-road conditions. Since it seats seven passengers, the car needs stability. The All Wheel Drive system makes the car stable on all kinds of surfaces.

Fuel Efficiency

Fuel efficiency is one of the main selling points of the Toyota Sienta.

Hybrid Models: The hybrid version offers up to 27 km/L (approx. 64 mpg).
Petrol Models: The conventional petrol engine provides around 18 km/L (approx. 42 mpg).
The Sienta's fuel cost makes it an affordable option.

Toyota says this powertrain is good for class-leading fuel efficiency of 27.2 km/l with the JC08 test cycle.

For the first time, I was surprised to achieve a fuel efficiency that was better than Toyota’s claimed 25.0 km/l. On one of my morning commutes to CBD in 100% city driving in peak hour traffic, the Sienta Hybrid managed to achieve 26.5 km/l with an EV driving ratio of 80%. This was truly impressive as I did not even put in any concerted effort to drive efficiently.

Wheelchair-Adapted Models

Wheelchair-adapted models feature a simple structure for the entire process from boarding to securing the wheelchair in place, improving ease of operation significantly in response to the growing demand for home care in an aging society. In addition, the newly equipped Type III model has a short ramp and other new features.

Type I Model: This model is equipped with a gentle ramp (slope angle 9.5°) with air suspension on the rear wheels and a manual ramp with a forward-tilt function, features that were well received in previous models.
Type II Model: This model is equipped primarily for children using wheelchairs. It allows wheelchair users to be positioned 1.5 rows back within reach of the driver's seat by folding down the passenger seat.
Type III Model: This model is newly designed primarily for corporate customers. When the rear hatch door is opened, a short ramp is deployed at the same time as the vehicle height is lowered, enabling entry and exit in tight spaces. When taking off and at low speeds, the steering operation force is reduced to about half that of the base model, allowing wheelchair users to drive the vehicle themselves.

Japan: Starting price is around ¥1,700,000 (approx. $15,000 USD).
Uganda: Used models can be found for around UGX 50,000,000 (approx. $13,500 USD).

With a base price of ¥2,329,855 (about $19,200), our Sienta Hybrid G model tester included optional 16-inch alloy wheels and several option packages bringing the bottom line to ¥2,846,203 (about $23,500). Sienta prices begin at ¥1,689,709 (about $13,900) for the non-hybrid front-drive V model.
