A Brief History of the Egyptian Sleeper Train

People underestimate how big of a country Egypt is, and how long it takes to travel between the different cities on the ground. Back in the early 1900’s the Egyptians introduced sleeper trains to add some comfort for the users of the railway service.

The sleeper service network expanded up and down the Nile from Alexandria to the Southern city of Aswan and offered a luxurious experience until sometime in the 1970’s, before it hit a stumbling block and had to be cancelled, due to its lack of maintenance over several decades.

As the sleeper train is an important aspect of Egypt’s more recent history, the government invested heavily into the infrastructure in the 1980’s which has allowed the night train to operate regularly until today.

Arrival at the Train Station

Before you set off on the sleeper train to Luxor, it’s essential to know where you’re heading. As of October 2024, the sleeper trains no longer depart from Ramses Station. Instead, they leave from Upper Egypt Train Station (Bashtil), making a stop at Giza Train Station (El Giza) about 30 minutes later.

Here’s what to keep in mind:

  • Arrive Early: Aim to get to the station at least 30 minutes before your departure to ensure you have enough time to navigate the station and find the correct platform. The train stations can get crowded, so giving yourself plenty of time will help you feel more relaxed.
  • Departure Stations: Double-check your departure point to avoid confusion. The sleeper train now departs from Upper Egypt Train Station (Bashtil) instead of Ramses Station. Then it makes a stop at Giza Train Station (El Giza).
  • Getting There: If you're coming from your hotel, taxis are a convenient option.

Cabins

The cabins are basic but comfortable, with seats that convert into bunk beds for sleeping. Each cabin has a small washbasin, mirror, and charging outlets, so you’re all set for the journey. After dinner, the attendant will set up your bed with cotton sheets, a pillow, and a thick blanket. The beds are basic but comfortable enough for a good night’s sleep, even with the train’s movement. The toilets are basic but functional and located at each end of the carriage.

Food and Drink

As for meals, dinner and breakfast are served on plastic trays, like an airplane meal. For dinner, we had a meat stew with rice, steamed veggies, and a bread roll. Breakfast was simple-just a croissant, bread roll, jam and cheese. It’s not gourmet, so if you’re particular about food or have dietary restrictions, bring your own food and snacks. There’s also a restaurant carriage for additional drinks or snacks.
