Allegations and Investigation
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) was requested by Mountain Judicial Circuit District Attorney George Christian to investigate "an incident" involving Sheriff Nichols on May 24. According to a source, a woman informed investigators that Sheriff Nichols attempted to isolate her in a building while they were setting up a campaign rally on May 21, the day before the primary election. She also reported witnessing Nichols naked, engaging in a sexual act.
Arrest and Charges
Sheriff Chad Nichols was arrested in late May as part of this investigation. He was charged with public indecency, sexual battery, and violation of oath by a public officer.
Suspension and Leadership Transition
Following the arrest, Sheriff Nichols was booked into the Rabun County Detention Center by his own deputies.

On June 14, Gov. Brian Kemp initially suspended Nichols for 60 days following the alleged incident. On Aug. 12, that suspension was extended by an additional 30 days.
During Sheriff Nichols' suspension, Major Beth Darnell assumed the role of sheriff while the investigation proceeded.
Re-election Campaign
At the time of the alleged incident, the two-term sheriff was running for re-election in Rabun County. Chad K. Nichols (Republican Party) ran for re-election to the Rabun County Sheriff in Georgia.
The primary runoff occurred on June 18, 2024. The general election will occur on November 5, 2024.
