Located in the northwestern side of Uganda, Murchison Falls National Park (MFNP) is the biggest national park in the country covering a total area of 3,840 sq km. Managed by the Ugandan Wildlife Authority, it is also the top tourist destination in Uganda and the most popular national park in the country due to its variety of attractions. Murchison Falls National Park sits in the northwestern corner of Uganda, spanning an impressive landscape where the Victoria Nile River carves through rugged terrain.
The park’s namesake, Murchison Falls, is where the Victoria Nile crashes through a six-metre-wide gorge and plunges with deafening force into the frothy waters below. Murchison falls was named after the mighty waterfalls which are formerly and locally known as Kabalega falls. The water originates from the Victoria Nile River, but it’s not like you’re used to seeing. The explorers John Speke and James Grant were the first Europeans to visit the present day MFCA in 1862. It was more thoroughly explored by Samuel and Florence Baker in 1863-4. Sir Samuel Baker coined the name Murchison during his 19th-century explorations of Uganda.
Between 1907 and 1912, the inhabitants of an area of about 13,000 km2 (5,000 sq mi) were evacuated due to sleeping sickness spread by tsetse flies. In 1910, the Bunyoro Game Reserve was created south of the River Nile. In 1952, the British administration established the National Parks Act of Uganda. That area roughly corresponds to the part of the MFNP that is in the districts of Buliisa, Masindi, and Kiryandongo.

Landscape and Wildlife
Murchison Falls National Park has different vegetations including savannah plains, savannah woodlands, swamps and forested areas which are all habitats to numerous species of mammals, birds, primates and reptiles. Murchison Falls National Park, Uganda’s biggest park, is home to nearly all of Africa’s main animals. It is a lion conservation unit with one of Africa’s largest populations of Roskilde Giraffes. In 2010, it was estimated that only 250 giraffes were in the park.

The peak season in Uganda comes in the dry season during the months of December to February and from June to September. During this period, Uganda receives a lot of tourists to the national parks. There are rains on most days and the vegetation in parks grows taller, roads of the park are slippery and sometimes you’ll be advised not to drive to the park if the roads are extremely slippery. Pools of water within the park are filled with water and animals are able to find water and pasture anywhere.
Safari lodges and camps reduce their prices during the low season because they are on a low demand as tourists are few in the country and at the destination. Generally, the park has few tourists and in case of any sightings on game drives, you will clearly see the animals without any obstructions.
Most animals especially grazers will be calving and this is the best time to see this. During the wet season, the volume of water in River Nile increases and the Murchison waterfalls are stronger than during the dry season. The months of December to February are ideal for visiting Murchison Falls National Park since the temperature is warm. The main visitor season runs from June through September, so expect the park to be congested during these months.
Birds in Murchison falls at this time of the year are many because there is plenty of food and they are breeding and in addition, the migratory birds have also arrived and the variety of species is at its peak. Many birds will be spotted along the shore and swamps of River Nile and all over in the plains and forests.
Due to significant rainfall, there are two low seasons: March to May and October through November. The birds in the park are particularly busy at this time of year. It is nesting season, and migrating birds fleeing severe European winters may be seen on the African savannah. Unfortunately, the low season is marked by severe rains, which make certain park routes unusable.

What to Pack for Your Safari

Do not carry a lot of money in cash but have what you are going to use in the mean time and withdraw the rest when you are already at the destination. Carry clothes that you’ll be comfortable in but remember that they should be descent because you need to be descent when you travel to villages in Uganda so that you don’t attract people’s attention.
Let the clothes that you’ll wear when traveling around the destination is loose. Carry a scarf, t-shirts, long sleeved shirts and sweaters to wear in the evening, caps, night dress. To deal with the dust (during the dry season) and mud, travel in a decent 4X4 car with adequate air conditioning (during the rainy season). Power bank/external battery charger - At least one, maybe two!

Getting to Murchison Falls National Park
Murchison Falls National Park is located 305km/190mi north of Kampala. Murchison Falls National Park is located in the northern region of Uganda. It is located north west of Kampala the capital city of Uganda. The park is spreads its boundaries to districts like, masindi, buyisa, kiryandongo and nwoya and it spans in land to form the shores of Lake Albert and over the bunyoro escarpment and around karuma falls wildlife reserve.
From Kampala, the drive to Murchison Falls takes about five hours, depending on traffic. The road winds through rolling hills, passing small villages and fields of cassava and maize. The drive to the southern entrance gate takes 4 to 5 hours. Coming from the southwest, the 280km/170mi drive from Fort Portal takes at least 6 hours. From Bwindi or Kibale, the journey by road is longer, taking up to nine hours.
However, the scenery changes dramatically, from misty highlands to the drier expanses of the north. If travelling from Queen Elizabeth National Park, the road journey takes around six hours, crossing the Albertine Rift. Getting to Murchison Falls national park is easy and affordable as one can decide to travel by bus and spend about 3hours from kampala.
It is also possible to fly to the park by chartered or scheduled aircraft service from Entebbe International Airport (EBB) or Kajjansi Airfield near Kampala. Other travelers decide to fly from entebbe kajjansi airport to the chobe airstrip which is the quickest means of transport to the park. Pakuba Airfield is the most convenient point of arrival for the main cluster of camps and lodges around the park headquarters at Paraa. When flying from abroad, you’ll arrive at Entebbe International Airport (EBB). It is located 46km/29mi from the capital (Kampala).
