Every suite here is sea-facing, and given how spectacular this stretch of sea is, that’s an especially good thing. Even the modestly named junior suite has, on top of the beach views, a walk-in closet, an oversized bathroom with a big tub and separate shower, and a sunny lounge that opens out onto a private terrace. The tropical and palm suites, starting at about 750 square feet, are positively enormous, and they only get bigger from there.

We had dinner at La Goelette, the resort’s excellent fine dining restaurant, feasting on delicious seafood as the warm breeze came in off the sea. Restaurant La Plage is situated right on the beach beneath the shade of a Badamier ‘Indian almond’ tree. It offers a pan-Asian menu created by Executive Chef William Girard. Take it from us, the crispy prawn salad followed by crabmeat pad thai was excellent.

There’s also a tranquil spa that is, appropriately enough for an island paradise, brimming with gurgling water features and shingle-roofed treatment cabins, most of which have big bay windows to let the sunlight in. Set amidst lush vegetation, all cabins are connected via a shaded pathway. Some of them have large bay windows to welcome the natural daylight. Each cabin has a different theme and a private patio. Adjacent to the entrance, a thatched pavilion houses the yoga area. An extensive pampering menu is on offer, featuring both ancestral rituals and cutting-edge technology.
The sports center offers the latest trends in fitness such as Pilates, Kinesis and cardio workout under the guidance of the team of sports coaches. Fitness Center: Tennis and Squash courts, table tennis and a Bociball pitch in the heart of the gardens are also available.

The staff were generally very friendly and helpful. There is a slight ‘island time’ vibe, (and we have found this to be true across Mauritius, not just here) so service is relatively casual in contrast to the hyper-attentive culture of luxury hotels in, for example, Southeast Asia. And waiters are quite happy to let you know if you’ve made a poor dinner choice and steer you towards a better option. But that’s just part of the deal here, and a taste of the national character.
The Royal Palm Beachcomber Luxury is a beach-focused resort, with palm-fringed ivory sands stretching off along the cove as far as the eye can see. Thatched parasols shade sun beds as the warm waves wash the shore. An army of white-uniformed waiters tends to your needs, bringing a selection of delicious cocktails and snacks. The water here is perfect, just the right temperature to cool you down.
Some untypically bad weather arrived during our stay, confining us to the room, and extra praise must be given to the room service staff who braved the conditions to keep us happily fed and cared for. Pouring rain can occur in a tropical country, but the Royal Palm Beachcomber Luxury dealt with it extremely well, putting on rum tastings, flower arranging lessons, and keeping us constantly updated.
It seems unlikely that it could really be so, but at the Royal Palm Beachcomber Luxury, the sand somehow looks a little more talcum-white, the turquoise-blue water a touch glassier and, strangest of all, the palm trees a bit denser with perfect shade-making fronds than everywhere else on Mauritius. It’s particularly hard to believe given that Mauritius is practically the Platonic form of a tropical island, the hotels here the things that winter workday fantasies are made of. Yet the Royal Palm’s location on the sheltered northwest coast of the island, and its eighty-two spacious, richly appointed suites, truly are the crème of the already rather rich Mauritian crème.
A private excursion on the hotel’s speedboat is yet another way to get your heart racing. When your only other plans are spa treatments and leisurely meals between hours of wading in that warm water and lounging in the sun, it might not be so bad to raise your blood pressure a bit.
Although we ran out of time to try this particular excursion, we were fascinated by the idea of a trip via helicopter to the underwater waterfall at Le Morne peninsula. This is not an actual waterfall, but a unique optical illusion that can only be seen from the sky.
The hotel’s circular, sunken cocktail bar has a perfect sea view to go with your evening aperitif. And the custom concoctions at the Royal Palm Beachcomber Luxury are delicious - though a couple will blow your head off (luckily the friendly French mixologist warned us not to have too many of one particularly powerful concoction!).
