Is there any hope? Can things really turn around for good? Certainly! The Bible says there is nothing impossible with God (Matthew 19:26). According to our text, all we have to do is humble ourselves, pray and turn from our wicked ways. As simple as this sounds, a lot of people find it hard to do.

This is why we need to ask God for grace to truly live righteous lives so that our land can blossom. “Righteousness exalts a nation; but sin is a reproach to any people” (Proverbs 14:34). It is our responsibility to rise up, pray for the peace of Nigeria and abolish the activities of Satan and his cohorts in the land. Nigeria is the Lord’s!

Father God, we think of our persecuted family in Nigeria. We think of their physical well-being as the death toll mounts. We pray boldly for their protection. We pray boldly that not one more bullet will take an innocent life. We ask You shield and protect Your children from great harm. Save them, Father. Let not one more life be taken for their faith in You. Please hear our prayers. “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God."

Our Nigerian family is living in the constant fear of not knowing: “Will we be attacked at our next church gathering? Will our village be set on fire? Our great God, we come before you and plead for the emotional well-being of our Christian family in Nigeria. We can’t even begin to comprehend the full gravity of their situation, where the threat of an attack is not just the thing of news articles, but actual reality.

We pray You protect their peace of mind and let their peace in You be contagious to their own family, friends and neighbors. Wash over them and let them feel Your constant presence, even in the unknown. We praise You, Father. “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous."

Our Lord God, we see the horrors in Nigeria. There is a war taking place against Your gifts. We ask and pray that our family feel Your presence, that your priceless gifts might burn and glow from within. We ask that, in spite of the atrocities around them, You would bless your children with Your Spirit, that they would feel you through all circumstances. We pray they won’t be robbed of You. Please hear our cries. “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control."

Lord, we know the power of government, and we know the difference between a government that helps instead of hinders. We ask You inspire and move inside those in power in Nigeria, that they would not sit idly by as attacks and violence increase, but would instead move and pass legislation to protect their people-all people. We know You are above all earthly kings; we ask You to move in Your earthly servants, that they would move swiftly in protecting those most vulnerable. “The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him, and he delivers them. Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in him."

God, our good Father, we come before You on behalf of our brothers and sisters living in captivity in Nigeria. We can’t imagine the horrors they’re facing. We feel their pain, doubt and fear. We ask You make Yourself known to them, comforting them, reminding them You are still God and are still in control. We pray boldly that all captives will be set free-today-in Your name. Please comfort Your children. “The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me, because the Lord has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor."

Family, friends and neighbors are losing their lives. There is personal anguish and spiritual pain. Lord, hate is something that can grow inside us, as a small bud at first, but can take deep roots and control our lives. We pray our brothers and sisters in Nigeria will not hate, but love. We ask You clothe them with Your understanding, that they will see these attackers not as brutal, mindless killers, but as Your precious creations. What a hard prayer, Father. We ask that You help our brothers and sisters love; let Your love be the ultimate example. "An unholy handshake.”

Father God, we see what’s happening in Nigeria, with the unifying of these groups for a common goal: to press a perversion of Islam and crush Christianity. But like Gideon’s troops watched as there was confusion in the camp below, we pray for the same. You are a God of miracles, and we ask for miraculous confusion amongst these groups. We pray for dissent and differences to push them further apart, instead of drawing them in. We ask this “unholy handshake” shatter into pieces, in Your righteous name. “Be strong and courageous."

Lord, You’ve blessed Your people with the precious gift of family. The evil one is trying to tear family apart at the seams, but we know united, there is nothing we can’t handle. We pray for the families of our brothers and sisters in Nigeria, that they’ll overcome the wiles of evil, that they’ll stay united physically, emotionally and spiritually. We pray your blessings over their families, because we know even if evil surrounds their houses, through You, there won’t be a door for evil to open. Please gift Your families with Your unity and presence. “No harm will overtake you, no disaster will come near your tent."

Evil is alive and well in Nigeria, constantly tearing down what others have worked so hard to build up. God, You are the One that can restore. You see the way evil is trying to drag Your people down, but because of You, we don’t have to stay down. In Nigeria, there is pain and loss. So much has been taken away and cut short. We pray for restoration and rebirth. We pray You will work miraculously and build Your people up. Please build Your people up again. Please show them Your mighty hand.

Our good Father, our Christian family in Nigeria has not recanted their faith. Even though the numbers of those injured and killed for their faith are staggering, Christians joyfully remain in Nigeria. We pray others will see the peace, love and joy in Your people and be attracted to it. We pray conversations and conversions will take place, that even though there is an enemy trying to kill Christianity, the number of Christians in the country will boom. We pray boldly that You work in the hearts of those opposed to Christianity; we pray they will see the error in their ways, confess their souls and welcome You in. We pray You restore Nigeria and make Yourself visible to all. Do what You do, Father God. In all things. “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth."

Prayers for Nigeria's Future

Today I will start by saying prayers for the citizens of Nigeria. For those who have been left battered and wounded mentally, emotionally, financially and physically by their own country and its leadership over a span of many years.

“And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm, and steadfast”. - 1 Peter 5:10

Father, heal their minds and soul from every damage, despair and discouragement. Fill their hearts with courage and strength for every new day. Fill their hearts with hope and faith for every new day. Take discouragement far from them. Heal every wound and help them stand strong. Amen!

For those who have become captives of their own nation’s failed leadership and have chosen to become a part of the looters, destroyers and enslavers. I choose to pray also for the ones whose hearts have been captured by greed, wickedness and selfishness.

“Therefore I will judge you, O house of Israel, each according to his conduct,” declares the Lord God. “Repent and turn away from all your transgressions, so that iniquity may not become a stumbling block to you.” - Ezekiel 18:30

“Again, when a wicked man turns away from his wickedness which he has committed and practices justice and righteousness, he will save his life. - Ezekiel 18:27

Heavenly father, I ask that you turn the hearts of these ones back to you. Show them the path to living a life that honors God and doing things God’s way. Liberate their minds from the corruption that is in the world and break the stronghold of Satan over their minds. Give them a servant’s heart that seeks to give and not to take. Help them turn from their wicked ways and lead them in paths of righteousness. Amen!

For the vulnerable amongst us - families, women and children who struggle each day to put food on the table and have a bleak future staring them in the face. Dear Father, please show them your mercy and kindness. Let help come to them quickly. I pray for the sick, weak and broken - that healing will come speedily and light will shine through at the end of every dark tunnel. Send help and true helpers to encourage and support them through the dark days.

For those who are fast losing hope and wonder what will become of their tomorrow - children, parents, families, business owners and those work hard daily to provide for their loved ones.

Father, you are the God of all hope. Turn their eyes to see you in the midst of the mountains of life. Take away every for of anxiety and help them know that you are in full control of their lives. May they find the courage to keep trusting you even when it seems hopeless. Renew their hope Lord, let them know that even though the seasons change, you are an unchanging God whose faithfulness abides forever. Amen!

Weeping may endure for a night, but rejoicing comes in the morning. - Psalm 30:5b

Father, we ask that your light shines upon our nation. May every dark cloud hovering over our nation shift. May our country rise from the ashes of despair and hopelessness. May your peace fill every nook and cranny of our nation.

May righteousness prevail within our borders and the wickedness come to an end. May strongholds of oppression and stagnation be destroyed. May the heart of its people find its way back to God. May they be filled with love and compassion for one another. May our leaders have the will and courage to truly serve its people and not be served.

May oppression be far from our land and mercy speak on our behalf. May the actions and inactions of our leaders and people be forgiven. May our children/youth find hope for their future and courage to dream again. May our glorious destiny be redeemed and our glory restored. May freedom come and God’s truth prevail.

May God be gracious unto us as a nation and people and bless us indeed. May his mercy and justice reign across the land. May we proper and flourish on every side. May we arise and shine. May God bring us into a place of peace, love, unity and prosperity. May our story as a nation be rewritten for good. May God be seen in our midst and the light of his glory shine upon us and give us victory.

Without a doubt, Nigeria is a beautiful and chosen nation.❤️ As an outsider (I’m Kenyan American) who has come to love this country, I am constantly in awe of the incredible talent and passion that comes from its people. But in as much as Nigeria is blessed, it seems that there is a constant spiritual smear campaign to discredit this country.

Let us never forget that even Jesus, our Lord and Savior, from the small and insignificant town of Nazareth, went on to redeem us. Let’s revisit Nathaniel’s statement, “Nazareth! Let’s lift up Nigeria and declare its blessings and potential for the world to see.

Imagine a united army of Nigerian intercessors like a battle axe, wielding the powerful Word of God, breaking every chain and stronghold over the beloved country. Intercessors- be enthusiastic and positive about the power we have been given through Christ. So why do I say this?… To implore Nigeria to surrender to God and declare His Word. Fall to your knees.

Dear Heavenly Father, we come to you with hearts full of love and hope for our beloved country, Nigeria. We pray for Nigeria to rise up as a strong battle axe in your hands, protected from all attacks from the enemy. May our leaders govern with transparency and integrity, seeking the best interests of the people they serve.

Lord, we pray for safety and protection over all citizens, both physically and spiritually. May we be shielded from harm and danger, and may those who seek to cause harm be stopped in their tracks. We also pray for unity in our country, that all divisions and hatred may be replaced with forgiveness and love. We ask for restoration and recompense for all that the enemy has plundered from our nation. May you redeem and restore what has been taken, bringing healing and wholeness to our land.

And finally, we pray for freedom from persecution for all those who face hardship because of their faith in Nigeria. Lord, we thank you for hearing our prayers and for your promise to do immeasurably more than we can ask or imagine. We trust in your power and sovereignty over our country, knowing that you have a great plan for Nigeria.
