Parklands was a northern white suburb popular with British civil servants at the time, which was named after the nearby City Park. The British brought with them the imperial club model, which had already flourished in serving the ruling elite in other colonies such as Australia, India, New Zealand, Singapore and South Africa; and clubs were set up by the British from Nairobi’s very earliest days as a colony. A number of them survive - as they do across Kenya as a whole today, with dozens of colonial-era clubs found in at least nine of the country’s counties. But unsurprisingly, Nairobi contains Kenya’s highest concentration of clubs.
Among these were the Muthaiga Golf Club, which claims a foundation date of 1922, and is close to the eponymous country club. Although it would come to rival the Royal Nairobi Golf Club with its 18-hole Championship golf course, its beginnings were humble, as an informal tournament among colonists. It was only with incorporation in 1943 that it would begin to be transformed into a much larger institution.
KENYA: A JOURNEY OF COLONIZATION AND INDEPENDENCE
Post-Colonial Era and Modernization
Kenya’s troubled transition to independence in the decade following the Mau-Mau rebellion saw much political and economic instability; and the granting of independence in 1963 saw a range of responses among the clubs dominated by white Europeans - these varied from opening up to African members overnight, to holding out against integration until the 1980s. However, with a new membership, most of the historic clubs adapted and survived - thrived, even; drawing on their unique cultural history.
While Parklands is known for its strong Asian influence, it is also home to a diverse mix of people from various backgrounds. Parklands is located close to City Park, which is how it got its name. It has a close proximity to Sarit, Westgate and Highridge. Parklands, due north of the city centre, is traditionally an Indian/Asian zone. The area is dotted with mosques and Hindu temples and there is a hospital, a university and school named after one of its most illustrious benefactors, the Aga Khan, who spent his early childhood in Nairobi.

Conservation Challenges and Urban Development
Lately in Kenya, urbanization has not been gradual but intermittent and drastic, meaning the erosion and abrasive disruptions pointed out above are even more amplified.
