The Pharaohs: Egypt's Men's Olympic Basketball Pioneers
The Egypt men’s basketball team, nicknamed The Pharaohs, holds a significant place in basketball history as the first African side to compete in the Olympic Games back in 1936. Though they have made seven appearances at the Olympic Games, the team has never managed to get near the podium. However, Egypt has been more successful at the continental level.
Between 1937 and 1953, Egypt competed in European competitions. Since 1962, the side have competed at FIBA AfroBasket, where they’ve claimed a joint-record 17 medals, including five golds.

New Egypt Girls' Basketball: A Decade of Excellence
The 20-9 season was by far the best girls basketball season in the 10-year history of the varsity program. The program's 20 wins surpassed the previous record of 16, set by last year's team. The Central Jersey Group 1 championship is the first basketball sectional title in school history, boys or girls.

Central Jersey Group 1 Championship
"It was so exciting to be in the moment of it," Bausher said. "To get the first sectional title in basketball history, boys or girls, and to even make it here is such an honor."
State Group 1 Semifinal
The Central Jersey Group 1 champion New Egypt Warriors battled back, but ended up on the losing end of a state Group 1 semifinal to the South Jersey Group 1 champions Haddon Township 47-43 at Williamstown High School on Wednesday. After New Egypt (20-9) took a one-point lead into the fourth quarter, Haddon Township (29-1) went on an 11-0 run, which gave the Hawks a 10-point lead with just under three minutes remaining.
Even with a 10-point deficit staring them in the face, the Warriors refused to call it quits. Haley Anderson nailed a 3-pointer to cut the Hawks' lead to just three points with 20 seconds left, but that was as close as the Warriors were able to cut the lead.
"(Haddon Township) went on a run, but they answered," New Egypt coach Matt Brogan said. "These girls never quit and they knew that no matter what happened, they could come back and win"

Emily Bausher's Standout Performance
New Egypt senior Emily Bausher was nearly unstoppable in the fourth quarter. She scored the first 13 of her team's points in the period and finished with a game-high 27 points.
"(Bausher) hit some tough, tough shots and I kept telling our girls, ‘you're playing well,' " Haddon Township coach Tom Mulligan said. "She was just making some big-time shots." Bausher hitting those big shots is nothing new for New Egypt. She led the team in scoring during the year and also became the first New Egypt player to eclipse the 1,000-point plateau.
"She's just a tremendous athlete," Brogan said. "She just worked hard for four years to get better. She's a great leader, a great teammate."
Strategic Gameplay
Mulligan credited Haddon Township's 11-0 run to steering away from his normal game plan, which is to run a full-court press on defense. It was the play of the Warriors that forced his hand.
"I just think they were all above average ball handlers," he said. "They brought (Haley) Anderson out a lot to disrupt our pressure, which was really smart of them."
Coach Brogan's Pride
Sure, his team came out on the losing end, but Brogan was more than pleased with his team's effort and made sure he told the girls to keep their heads up as they walked off the court.
"It was the greatest game I ever watched them play," he said. "We lost by four, but I won't remember that. They fought for 32 minutes and didn't give Haddon Township an inch. And they wanted to win more than anything in the world and I'll remember that."
Brogan might end up remembering this season for another even more important reason. It might be the year that launches the New Egypt girls basketball program to the next level.
"These girls have made it cool to play basketball in New Egypt and they've become idols and they've become heroes," Brogan said.
