Mukambi Safari Lodge: An Immersive Zambian Wildlife Experience

Mukambi Safari Lodge, strategically located in the heart of one of Africa's largest wildlife parks, serves as an exceptional base for exploring the vast Kafue National Park. Being the only lodge open year-round in the North and Central regions of Kafue, it offers a unique advantage for visitors seeking to delve into this less-traveled wilderness area.

A Warm Welcome and a Unique Introduction

The owners of Mukambi Safari Lodge, Idjan and Robyn, are known for their hospitality. They graciously invite guests into their home, creating a welcoming atmosphere.

Mukambi has been home to Basil, the resident hippo, for 14 years. It was quite an experience to sit outside and enjoy a delicious meal while a hippo grazed on the edges of the garden lawns! Sadly, Basil died at the end of 2016 while defending his territory against a younger, stronger bull.

Comfort and Luxury Amidst the Wild

The lodge offers a range of accommodations to suit different preferences:

During a fishing excursion, an exciting wildlife encounter unfolded as a lone Spurwing goose, perched on a dead tree, was "warned" by an adult African fish eagle. The fish eagle's alarm call prompted the Spurwing goose to take flight, only to be nearly caught by a juvenile Martial eagle, with the fish eagle intervening. The Martial eagle eventually retreated, allowing the Spurwing goose to escape. It is believed that the fish eagle's actions were driven more by territorial instincts than by a desire to save the goose.

Guiding and Wildlife Sightings

Game viewing in the national parks is generally very good. Here is a summary of what can be seen:

  • Numerous lion sightings.
  • Unique leopard sightings, some with cubs.
  • Carmine bee eater colony.
  • Game appears to be the strongest at South Luangwa northern sector.

One visitor noted concerns about guiding practices, particularly regarding the sharing of sightings with competing camps. However, this appears to be an isolated incident.
