Why Choose the High Atlas Mountains for Mountain Biking?
The High Atlas Mountains form the highest mountain range in North Africa, with peaks that soar above 4,000 meters. The area is also home to the Berber people, whose traditional way of life has remained largely unchanged for centuries.
Here’s what makes biking in the Atlas Mountains so exceptional:
- Diverse Terrain: The area offers varied biking routes, from challenging singletracks to scenic gravel paths, suitable for different skill levels.
- Breathtaking Views: The landscapes range from snow-capped peaks to arid deserts, providing stunning vistas throughout your ride.
- Cultural Encounters: Experience the warmth and traditions of the Berber people, and explore their ancient villages and vibrant markets.
- Adventure and Challenge: The high-altitude routes and technical sections provide a rigorous test for even the most experienced riders, with rewarding views and a sense of achievement.

The Value of a Local Guide
When it comes to exploring the High Atlas Mountains, the value of a knowledgeable local guide cannot be overstated. These guides are often native Berbers who have spent their lives traversing these rugged trails. They possess an intimate understanding of the terrain, weather patterns, and the local flora and fauna. Having a local guide also enhances your connection with the landscape.

They can take you off the beaten path to discover hidden gems that most tourists would overlook, like secluded waterfalls or lesser-known mountain passes. They can also provide invaluable insights into the local culture and customs.
Exploring Berber Villages
One of the highlights of hiking or biking in the High Atlas Mountains is the opportunity to visit traditional Berber villages. Nestled in the valleys and clinging to the mountainsides, these villages offer a glimpse into a way of life that has endured for centuries. As you trek from village to village, you’ll have the chance to meet the locals, sample traditional Moroccan cuisine, and even stay in a Berber guesthouse.
Summiting Mount Toubkal
No hiking trip to the High Atlas Mountains is complete without attempting to summit Mount Toubkal, the highest peak in North Africa at 4,167 meters. The ascent is challenging but rewarding, offering panoramic views that stretch as far as the Sahara Desert on a clear day. The journey to the top typically takes two days, with an overnight stay at a mountain refuge. Reaching the summit is a moment of triumph, one that will stay with you long after you’ve descended.

Moroccan Cuisine
Enjoy traditional dishes like tagines, couscous, and fresh pastries. Moroccan food is a highlight of any cultural experience.
Festivals and Local Crafts
Depending on your visit, you might witness local festivals or explore markets offering handcrafted goods. Marrakech is renowned for its vibrant souks and artisanal products.
Accommodation Along the Trails
The trail can be ridden while fully relying on mountain hostels or homestays along the way. You will find plenty of options on Day 1, all through the valley of Ait Bougmez, as well as in Telouat (Day 5). Other than this, the options are very scarce and reduce the flexibility on how to organize daily stages. Absolute highlights are the mountain hostels of Gite Rogoult and the Gite Ifoulou Tessaout (Days 2 and 3).
In the villages of Anmiter (Day 4) and Azgour (Day 6), no official accommodations exist, but it is possible to stay “chez l’habitant” at a local family’s house.
There are no established campgrounds, but spectacular wild camping spots can be found along the route. Even in excluded mountain areas, you will always find people herding the goats or working the fields. Approach locals when preparing your campground, explaining your presence. Locals will welcome you and, with a bit of luck, invite you for a tea and snack.
Recommended Accommodations:
- Valley of Ait Bougemez (Day 1): Gite Marabou located at the beginning of the valley of Ait Bougmez (Vallée Heureuse), this mountain hostel is made for bikers and hikers exploring the Mgoun area.
- Rouguelt (Day 2): Gite Rogoult is a charming little mountain hostel with two large rooms fitting six mattresses each and one large living room.
- Ifoulou (Day 3): Gite Ifoulou Tassaout fantastic mountain hostel right at the untamed waters of the Tessaout river.
- Anmiter (Day 4): Mohamed from the Café Majorelle hosted us and served a wonderful tagine. The place has several generous rooms with Majorelle posters and original photos on the walls.
- Telouet (Day 5): We spent our recovery day in the Lion d’Or, a small hotel next to the famous Kasbah Glaoui.
- Azgour (Day 6): Azgour is a small village on the river Zat with no official accommodation. The brothers Bougma and Brahim organise trips and are used to hosting travelers in a very basic room, sharing the house with the cows’ stable.
