Metroplex Mall Naalya: A Hub for Healthcare and Community in Uganda

Ugandans now have increased access to specialized outpatient health care services thanks to the Aga Khan University Hospital’s Nakawa Specialty Centre, conveniently situated on the Old Port Bell Road. This new facility is an integral part of the Aga Khan University’s (AKU) expanding presence in Kampala.

Aga Khan University Hospital's Nakawa Specialty Centre

The Nakawa Specialty Centre is the first facility on the upcoming Aga Khan University’s Kampala campus. It provides a range of essential services, including:

  • Chemotherapy
  • Dialysis
  • Diagnostic imaging (CT scans, mammography, neurophysiology, and ultrasound)

Additionally, the center offers access to specialists in various fields such as:

  • Gynaecology
  • Paediatrics
  • Cardiology
  • Neurophysiology
  • Oncology
  • Endocrinology

Further enhancing its comprehensive care, the center also provides physiotherapy, mammography, dentistry, laboratory, and pharmacy services.

Government Support and Investment

During the inauguration of the Centre, Uganda’s State Minister for Health Hon. Margaret Muhanga commended the Aga Khan University for its ongoing contributions to the health and education sectors in Uganda. Hon. Muhanga stated, "The opening of the Nakawa specialty centre will boost access to specialised quality healthcare to our people and reduce the need to travel abroad.” She also affirmed the government's commitment to providing quality healthcare to all citizens, expressing happiness in partnering with organizations like the Aga Khan University.

The government looks forward to the completion of the Main Hospital in the coming years.

Strategic Expansion in Kampala

The Nakawa Specialty Centre complements the Hospital’s existing medical centers in Kampala, which are located at the Acacia Mall, Metroplex Mall Naalya, and the DTB building. By opening this center, the Aga Khan University Hospital reaffirms its dedication to delivering world-class healthcare services in Uganda. According to Rashid Khalani, CEO of the Aga Khan University Hospital, the center is equipped with state-of-the-art technology to ensure timely, accurate, and advanced diagnoses, leading to more effective treatments.

Gratitude for Support

AKU has expressed its gratitude to Mr. & Mrs. Aziz Manji and their family for their generous donation towards the establishment of the Aziz & Zubeda Manji Building, which houses the new Nakawa Specialty Centre.

Future Developments

Currently under construction on AKU’s Kampala campus are a seven-storey University Centre and a nine-storey student housing building. Construction of the Aga Khan University Hospital, Kampala is scheduled to begin next year. AKU President Sulaiman Shahabuddin envisions the hospital and campus becoming part of an integrated network of international-quality health and education institutions spanning East Africa.

AKU's Extensive Network

AKU and the Aga Khan Health Services currently manage five hospitals and over 100 clinics across Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, serving more than 2 million patients annually. Amb. Amin Mawji, Diplomatic Representative of the Aga Khan Development Network in Uganda, emphasized that the opening of the Nakawa Specialty Centre is a significant step in bringing high-quality healthcare closer to Ugandans, aiming to eliminate the need for long waits or overseas travel for medical care.

Significant Investment in East Africa

The Kampala project represents one of AKU’s most substantial investments in East Africa to date. It will significantly expand the University's existing School of Nursing and Midwifery in Kampala and facilitate the training of medical specialists in various fields. The Hospital will provide care in nearly two dozen specialties.

Long-Standing Presence in Uganda

AKU has maintained an active presence in Uganda for 24 years. In Kampala alone, it has graduated 1,400 nurses and midwives who are now working in government and private-sector institutions across urban and rural communities. Additionally, several hundred Ugandan teachers and journalists have graduated from or are enrolled at AKU, and more than 2,000 have completed short courses.

Naalya is located approximately 12.5 kilometres (7.8 mi), by road, northeast of Kampala's central business district. From Kampala, one can follow the Kampala-Jinja Highway eastwards for 10.5 kilometres (6.5 mi) to Kireka, then turn north and travel another 2 kilometres (1.2 mi) to Naalya.

Development of Naalya

In the 21st century, Naalya is evolving into a middle-class residential neighborhood characterized by high-rise apartment complexes and modest residential bungalows. The Kampala Northern Bypass Highway passes through the township, connecting Bweyogerere to Kiwaatule. Alongside residences and highways, supermarkets and shopping malls are increasingly emerging.
