A Look Back: The History of Lavington
Lavington's roots date back to colonial Kenya when it was predominantly a residential area for European settlers. Over time, it evolved into a multicultural hub, blending modern developments with its rich history. In The late 19th century, Lavington was first developed as a residential neighborhood for British residents during the colonial era. It has developed into a thriving community throughout time, renowned for its leafy streets, roomy residences, and urban atmosphere.
The bulk of the area now known as Lavington was originally the St Austin’s Mission established by the French Holy Ghost Fathers. In the 19th century, Lavington was home to the St. Austin’s mission of the French Holy Ghost Fathers. These missionaries initially set up along the East African coast with the hopes of fighting against the slave trade and converting as many as possible to the catholic faith. Due to minimal success in their evangelical mission on the coast, the brothers travelled to Nairobi where they made arrangements to acquire land. Catholic officials from the brotherhood came together to form a new church. Bishop Emile Allgeyer, Father Alain Hemery and Brother Blanchard Dilenseger founded the Catholic Church in Lavington on 12th August 1899. While there, the missionaries experimented and planted the first coffee trees in 1900. St. Austin’s parish stands as a proud remnant of the catholic church that was there at the very genesis of Lavington.
The 20 sq. kilometre land that Lavington sits on was initially set apart for white settler farmers to reside on. In fact, the name Lavington was devised by British colonialists who began to arrive in Kenya at the beginning of the 20th century. A famous British politician called Ralph Payne - the very first Baron of Lavington - inspired the estate’s name. Due to racial segregation, only white Europeans inhabited areas like Lavington where fertile soils abounded. The year-round vegetation made it a prime area to farm and live. It also made areas like Lavington less prone to flooding unlike drier areas of Nairobi on lower ground. The abundance of trees and lack of flooding reduced the existence of disease-ridden mosquitoes.
At the time, Buchannan’s Kenya Estates were undertaking projects to grow Lavington. They were the makers of famous white and black Scottish whiskey. The alcohol makers granted two free plots for the building of a church as part of the development projects. Still, building a church required far more resources than those on hand. Collaboration ensued between the Anglican, Presbyterian and Methodist communities. On 4th June 1960, Kenyan Governor Sir Patrick Renison opened Lavington United Church. Given the collaboration between three different denominations to build the church that sits on two plots, the church caters for all three.
Today, Lavington has emerged as a flourished city with abundant flora and manicured gardens. These days, Lavington is a fairly quiet suburb. It has remained abundant with flora and one can often spot perfectly manicured hedges and flower gardens wrapped around residences.

Lavington United Church was founded in 1960 through a joint effort of the Anglican Church of Kenya (ACK), Methodist Church of Kenya (MCK) and the Presbyterian Church of East Africa (PCEA) as a community church to minister to the Lavington community. In the post-World War II 1950's quite a number of people felt they wanted a change and many chose, Africa as a sparsely populated 'land of opportunity'. Nairobi in particular expanded rapidly with an influx of settlers from overseas - mainly Europe but also local Africans. In the new housing estates around Nairobi groups of Christians begun meeting in the spirit of 'where two or three are gathered in My Name I am there with them.' Matthew 18:20. They were galvanized into action by the offer of two plots free by the Buchannan's Kenya Estates, makers of a well-known Scottish Black and White whiskey, who were developing the Lavington area. One plot was to be for the Anglicans and one for the Presbyterians - there were few Methodists in Nairobi at that time.
Inspired by the Holy Spirit and encouraged by the shortage of manpower, money and other resources representatives of the three main line protestant churches - Anglican, Presbyterian and Methodist decided to combine together and use one of the plots for a combined united church and the other for a minister's house and church hall. The Methodist provided the largest sum of money and a minister so it was decided that the church should be under the jurisdiction and discipline of the Methodist Church in Kenya. So a delicate balance had to be struck by the Leaders of Lavington Church between being a normal Methodist church and one that catered for the Anglicans, Presbyterians and the Community of Lavington generally.
Truly God led those early leaders and congregations as they signed a formal agreement to build a united church and Lavington Church was formally opened by the Governor Sir Patrick Renison on 4 June 1960. Some members of Lavington doubted whether such an ecumenical arrangement would work in practice. On 4th July 2010 we celebrated the 50th (Golden) Anniversary, so it is clear that with God all things are possible.
