Chad Dickson, also known as Numbuh 274, is a major character in Codename: Kids Next Door. Initially introduced as the best KND operative, he later becomes an antagonist before his true allegiance is revealed.
Known for his skills and leadership, Chad rose through the ranks to become the Supreme Leader of the KND.
Rise to Power and Mentorship
He was known as the best KND Operative, who rose through the ranks after becoming famous after defeating an infamous gang of adult tyrants, and eventually became Supreme Leader of the KND, commanding the organization for five years and becoming Numbuh One's mentor during his days at the KND Antarctic Academy. Chad had been in charge of the Kids Next Door during the Kid War, with the Kid Titans of Demoral, where he worked alongside Numbuh 100 in which he later rose through the ranks that granted him the post of Kids Next Door commander in 1998, by Numbuh 100. He was one of the most famous operatives in the organization during his reign as Supreme Leader, even having his own set of Trading Cards. In spite of this, he is often humble and mild mannered.
His classic outfit as 274 is a red full body suit and what I think is a noodle strainer on his head, only revealing a little of his blonde hair. His hat thing has a strap and on he also has shoulder pads and a chest protector with a big yellow “274”. Plus, his boots are brown.
He is very loyal to the KND, taking on his own parents and putting his social life at risk to protect Sector V. He is shown to avoid unnecessary conflict, often by reason or just leaving the situation. He's also shown to be scared of Numbuh 362 when she's angry, as he backs away before she yells at Numbuh 86.

The Apparent Betrayal
After making several appearances, Chad suddenly changed the moment he turned 13 and served as a high-ranking member of the Teen Ninjas. Not wanting to leave the Kids Next Door, he made it so that several others would be labeled 13 even when they clearly aren't. He becomes more vain and cold-hearted, especially towards his former subordinates. He becomes a stereotypical jock, even becoming captain of his school's football team. After being discovered, he attempts to throw the KND Moonbase into the sun, but is defeated.
After his apparent betrayal of the KND, Chad would be a recurring villain, fighting the Kids Next Door on multiple occasions. His standard attire as a villain was his Junior High football uniform and Battle Ready Armor just like most of the Teen Ninjas, and he would be seen wearing a Navy blue shirt as his casual attire.
He develops a rivalry with the members of Sector V, specifically Numbuh 1, who took his betrayal worse than the others. Though he is indifferent to how his former subordinates feel about his betrayal, his personality changes as well. He becomes more vain and cold-hearted, especially towards his former subordinates.
Chad was originally meant to be a one-off character. He was written into more episodes because the writers needed someone to be better than Numbuh 1.
Undercover Operative
Later, however, in Operation: T.R.E.A.T.Y., Chad is arrested for breaking into the KND's Diplomat, Numbuh Infinity's office, yelling at him for being "double-crossed" after the Teen Ninjas send over a peace treaty to the KND. Numbuh 1 intervenes, but both are arrested and framed by Numbuh Infinity for trying to stop the treaty. Chad and Numbuh 1 spend the rest of the episode trying to stop the treaty, as Chad reveals that it's a trap.
Despite what everyone thought, Chad had been fiercely loyal to the KND throughout the series. She reveals to Numbuh 1 that Chad never betrayed the KND and is, in fact, one of their Teenage Operatives. His plot to destroy the Moonbase in Operation: E.N.D. was a ploy to discourage Cree from doing the same, as well as a way to infiltrate the Teen Ninjas.

Behind the scenes, he sabotaged the villains' plans and leaked intel that ultimately saved Nigel and his friends many times. His reason for stopping the treaty was to save the KND from the trap, but Nigel blew his cover.
Chad has revealed that the entire time he was a Teen Ninja, he'd actually been an undercover KND teen operative. The incident in Operation: E.N.D. was actually a trick to stop Cree from trying the same thing, and Chad had been at the Moonbase earlier to warn Numbuh Infinity about the teen's trap.
Practically every mission you and Sector V did, I was right there, helping from the sidelines and you didn't even know it!
Feud with Numbuh 1
Though not revealed in Operation: T.R.E.A.T.Y., his feud with Nigel in that episode was based on the fact that he was passed over as a galactic level operative in favor of Numbuh 1 despite destroying his KND legacy for them. Chad is also more hostile to Nigel in this episode, claiming that he took something that was rightly his, though Numbuh 1 has no idea what he is talking about.
After arranging an escape, Chad took Numbuh 1 to a secret Teenage Hideout hoping to find something to destroy the handcuffs. But when they arrived, Chad also moved to beat Numbuh 1 for "taking what should be [his]." As a battle broke out and the carrier started to fall from the sky, Chad and Numbuh 1 had their final fight, which ended when Numbuh 1 forced Chad over the edge of the carrier.

Numbuh 1 asked if he was referring to the KND Splinter Cell. Chad said there was no splinter cell, but that the others used that as a way to cover their tracks.
Chad also tried to plea with Numbuh 1 not to go along with the GKND's twisted plans and point out how evil they really are. But the GKND takes Chad away.
Numbuh 1 and Numbuh 4 are the only two operatives to ever defeat Chad in combat, with Numbuh 4 doing it twice.

Physical Attributes and Skills
Chad has physical attributes that are far more developed than any teenager or Kid operative, likely due to rigorous training. He was skilled, talented, handsome, and involved in several extracurricular activities on top of running the entire KND organization.
As Numbuh 274, Chad shows nearly unparalleled combat skills whilst sparring with Numbuh 1/Nigel.
Personality
During his reign as leader, Chad let all that glory and power go to his head that he couldn’t bear the thought of leaving the organization when his 13th birthday came. He went as far as throwing others under the bus to ensure he stayed leader even if he became a teenager. However, there are subtle hints that his treachery turns out to be a ruse.
While his hatred for the KND was likely a front (as he was still working with the TND), it's still implied that he's self-absorbed, still feeling that he's "the best there was". He also has a grudge against Nigel for being chosen over him for the GKND and for ruining his life and reputation (which might explain his intense hatred of him and obsession with killing him throughout the series).
Chad was so devoted to the cause of the Kids Next Door that he willingly turned traitor and smeared his good name in order to serve as a spy. That does not detract from the fact that he became a jerk as his jealousy for Numbuh 1 consumed him. Eventually, he is so driven by his envy that he tries to kill Nigel in his final appearance on the penultimate episode of the show, despite still being loyal to the organization as a whole.
Relationships
- Numbuh 1: Numbuh 1 was close to Chad when he was in the KND training academy and were friends until Operation: E.N.D.
- Numbuh 4: Numbuh 4 and Chad's relationship before he betrayed the KND was not very focused on. Numbuh 4 was hurt after he betrayed the KND. Almost every time Chad encounters Sector V, Numbuh 4 is the only one to engage in a fight with him excluding Numbuh 1.
- Chuckie Cavallaro: Chuckie Cavallaro became Chad's friend when he became a Teen Ninja and are classmates in Hendrie Middle School. This friendship was shown only in Operation: E.L.E.C.T.I.O.N.S.
