Kenyan Athletes and Nike: A History of Collaboration and Iconic Apparel

The partnership between Kenyan athletes and Nike has a rich history, marked by innovative designs and memorable apparel. From Olympic kits to exclusive clothing lines for world-renowned runners, this collaboration has left a significant mark on both sports and fashion.

Here's a look at some key moments and collections:

The Olympic Kits: A Source of National Pride and Social Commentary

The National Olympic Committee released pictures of the kits expected to be worn by Kenyan athletes at the Tokyo Olympic Games. The designs sparked a range of reactions on social media. Some associated the kits with cobwebs and honeycombs, while others felt the name "KENYA" was not prominent enough on the fabric. Some fans praised the 2012 uniform as the best, while others preferred the 2016 kits.

Amid the negative comments, some fans defended Nike's sponsorship and design choices, arguing that Nike has its own designers in Oregon. One fan said, “Our kit was just ok. Bring back the black Nike jackets and retain our red jackets too, they were unique."

Despite differing opinions, the Olympic kits remain a symbol of national pride and athletic achievement.

Social Media's Role

Social media allows people to be ugly, and this seems to be a global phenomenon.

Eliud Kipchoge: Launching His Own NIKE EK-Line

Following in the footsteps of Michael Jordan and Cristiano Ronaldo, Eliud Kipchoge, the first person to run a marathon in under 2 hours, launched his own NIKE clothing line. The NIKE EK-line includes shoes such as the Alpha-Fly and the Pegasus, as well as other running apparel. The EK-line is available in NIKE stores around the world and their online store.

This unique collection is a NIKE initiative to honor the greatest marathon athlete in history. The campaign slogan ‘Run unlimited’ aims to spread Eliud’s legacy on a global scale. Eliud Kipchoge: “It is a long time now since I started running, and while my runs have changed, I’ve always experienced the same joy. I’m incredibly proud to represent Kenya around the clock and with this collection from Nike Running and myself, people can now wear the flag all around the world."

On October 12th, 2019, NN Running Team athlete Eliud Kipchoge became the first person in history to break the 2-hour marathon barrier during the INEOS 1:59 Challenge. In Vienna, Austria, the Kenyan, along with 40 world-class pacemakers, crossed the finish line after 1 hour, 59 minutes, and 40 seconds.

The Eliud Kipchoge Collection includes five Nike running footwear silhouettes: the Nike Alphafly 2, Nike Vaporfly 3, Nike Zoom Fly 5, Pegasus 40 and Nike Victory track spike.

Every component of Faith's collection is designed to support runners chasing their best. "This Nike collection represents the parts of my life that I bring to every run: my Kenyan heritage, dedication to my daughter, and commitment to pushing boundaries in life and sport," says Faith. "The entire collection is beautiful and built for performance, and I hope each piece inspires athletes, especially women, to dream big, then put in the hard work to turn their dreams into reality".

Faith's journey has redefined greatness, from running barefoot in her native Kenya to becoming the most decorated woman middle-distance athlete of all time, earning three Olympic gold medals and world records in the mile and 1,500-meter run.

The collection honors that journey, blending Kenyan-inspired color design with performance-focused innovations for every runner. Faith's footwear and apparel are awash with her favorite color, purple, which represents the energy, passion, and spirit she brings to every race. The vibrant hue is paired with red and green accents that mirror the Kenyan flag and celebrate her heritage and global impact.

Each footwear silhouette features a double Swoosh design inspired by the bond Faith shares with her daughter, representing empowerment across generations while reminding runners that greatness is fueled by love, commitment, and determination.

Meanwhile, blurred print designs throughout Faith's AeroSwift apparel embody her generational speed, celebrating her status as the fastest in the world and inspiring runners to chase their own breakthrough moments. Pieces throughout the collection are also adorned with Faith's initials, which take on a double meaning, "fastest known," within the running community, adding a layer of motivation for runners inspired by her groundbreaking achievements.

The collection debuts ahead of Faith's attempt to break the 4-minute barrier in the mile, a historic benchmark that was once considered an insurmountable limitation. Through Breaking4, she will attempt to shave at least 7.65 seconds off her personal best of 4:07.64 to become the first woman to break the threshold Roger Bannister first surpassed roughly 70 years ago.

Nike has provided unyielding support for her pursuit of the landmark feat.

The Faith Kipyegon Collection is awash in her favourite colour, purple, which represents the energy, passion and spirit she brings to every race. Red and green accents mirror the Kenyan flag.
