Kenya Airways Lounge Access at JFK: A Comprehensive Guide

Beginning your journey with Kenya Airways from JFK Airport? Terminal 4, the central hub of this airline’s operations, will be your starting point. As an international terminal, Terminal 4 accommodates a myriad of airlines and caters to millions of passengers annually.

Kenya Airways Check-in and Security at JFK Terminal 4

At 9AM I saw a check-in area being set up, and also some balloons, so I assumed that was Kenya Airways. Sure enough it was. All of the contract employees were still being trained on the airline, there were lots of selfies and pictures, etc. I headed towards security. Passengers flying with Kenya Airways do not have access to TSA PreCheck and may need to utilize security areas on the arrivals level at Terminal 4. In the afternoons security in Terminal 4 is awful, though it wasn’t bad at all this early in the day.

Lounge Access at JFK

Kenya Airways uses the Delta Sky Club at JFK. I headed in the direction of the SkyClub, and while doing so walked past our departure gate, #29. I did have a bit of an adventure arguing to get in, though, since the SkyClub agent was convinced that Kenya Airways wasn’t a SkyTeam airline, and as a result didn’t want to let me in.

Navigating JFK Airport

The task of navigating JFK Airport, characterized by its U-shaped layout and numerous terminals, may initially appear challenging. But rest assured, clear signage along JFK Access Road or JFK Expressway will guide you to Terminal 4. The most convenient way to travel between terminals at JFK, including reaching Terminal 4, is by using the free AirTrain service. AirTrain JFK serves as a reliable ally in traversing the extensive spread of JFK Airport. While free for on-airport travel, reaching the public transportation network at Jamaica and Howard Beach Stations via AirTrain JFK incurs an $8.50 fee.

Upon exiting JFK Airport, you’ll find a plethora of public transportation options at your disposal. You can take the E subway line or the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) from Jamaica Station, or the A subway line from Howard Beach Station. To reach Manhattan, the LIRR from Jamaica Station is a good choice, taking approximately 30 minutes.

Special Assistance and Accessibility

JFK Airport is dedicated to ensuring an inclusive experience for all its travelers. Passengers with hidden disabilities can use the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Lanyard at JFK Airport to signal they may require additional assistance. Furthermore, the arrivals accessibility program provides personal service, including expedited customs processing. However, requests for these services should be made at least 72 hours in advance via the airport’s Contact Us page.

If you require services such as wheelchair assistance or special accommodations for oxygen requirements, arrange these with Kenya Airways before your flight. For those traveling with China Airlines or Kuwait Airways, similar services can also be arranged.

Connecting Flights

If your journey involves a connecting flight at JFK, you’re well-situated. Kenya Airways, which departs from Terminal 4, is conveniently located for connections with Delta Airlines flights at the Delta terminal. The AirTrain interconnects all JFK terminals, necessitating a security re-check-in upon arrival at your desired terminal. However, Terminals 4 and 5 are connected by a walkway for easier access.

Kenya Airways Simba Lounge Review (NBO)

We may think of Simba as the given name of a Disney character, but the word just means lion in Swahili.

Simba Lounge at Nairobi International Airport

Location + Access + Hours

This lounge is located just past security checkpoint in Terminal 1A on the second level. It is open daily from 5:00 am to 12:00 am and available to SkyTeam business class passengers and travelers with ElitePlus status (plus one guest).

As I took the elevator up to the lounge, I was surrounded by three ladies who shoved a spa menu in my hand and aggressively tried to coax me to the airport spa, which is located down the hall from the lounge. They would not take “no” for an answer and walked with me all the way down to the lounge (I think it’s safe to say they get a commission for bringing people in…). At the front desk, my boarding pass was scanned and I was pointed into the lounge without even a welcome.

Seating

Kenya Airways describes its Simba Lounge as feating “African cultural interior design complemented by contemporary Italian furniture.” And indeed, the lounge had artwork and many nooks and crannies with chairs or couches.

Food + Drink

I arrived during a time of transition between breakfast and lunch, hence there was limited food on on offer, but a wide variety of beverages. All beverages are self-serve, including beer, wine, and spirits, and there was a large Nestle espresso machine (I had far superior coffee in the Turkish Airlines Lounge) as well as tea, water, and soft drinks.

Food selection, theoretically, included a number of hot items rotated throughout the day, plus a small salad bar and pastries, bread, and sweets. However, these trays were empty during my visit just before noon. Red cabbage and beets, two of my favorites!

Live cooking was introduced across on 1st October and the culinary dishes range from eggs prepared with specific guests’ preference style, to stir fried pasta accompanied with ingredients that are locally sourced thus, promoting our sustainability airline challenge.

Restrooms + Showers

Both restrooms and showers are available in this lounge. While the shower suites were unlocked, ask reception for towels.
