John Shrader: A Career in Sports Media and a Call to Zambia

John Shrader is an Emmy-award winning sports broadcaster and journalist who teaches Sports Media and Broadcasting at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

His career includes more than 30 years in San Francisco, 15 years at KNBR Radio, the home of the Giants and the 49ers.

He was the voice of the San Jose Earthquakes on radio and TV for 15 years; and spent about a decade as voice of San Jose State football and basketball.

He was the primary 49ers reporter for KNBR for most of those 15 years.

The podcast provides an inside look at the media business, with interviews and analysis from a college professor and long time radio and TV broadcaster.

Another episode featured Doug Duda, program director for ESPN Tri-Cities, discussing the intricacies of sports broadcasting in Central Nebraska.

The Call to Zambia

In 2011, John's wife Esther felt the call to be a missionary overseas.

An opportunity opened up to move to Zambia through TeamZambia led by David Rea.

Esther Joy Keller was born on May 9, 1981, in Interlachen, Florida, to Michael Keller and Suzette Keller.

After a survey trip in March 2012, she and her husband made the decision to move to Zambia to pursue full-time missions.

She and her family moved to Kafue, Zambia on June 6, 2014.

Esther was saved when she was six years old.

Along with her siblings, Esther was homeschooled growing up.

She and her siblings were raised as active participants of Bill Gothard's Institute in Basic Life Principles, and regularly attended the yearly Advanced Training Institute conferences in Big Sandy, Texas.

In 1996, her father made the decision to quit his job and begin working in full-time ministry at a local juvenile detention center.
