Lamu Island, a Unesco World Heritage Site since 2001 and a centre of Swahili and Islamic culture for over 700 years, is the most popular and most developed of the islands and its hotels have gained a well-deserved reputation for delivering a superb ‘barefoot luxury’ experience. Lamu Old Town is worth exploring - either on your own or as part of an organised tour - and there are plenty of opportunities to pick up traditional clothing, silver jewellery and leatherwear.

Less developed Manda Island offers a more exclusive feel just across the narrow channel from Lamu Island. It’s virtually uninhabited but besides the archipelago’s airport, the island is home to several archeologically important sites including the ruined towns of Takwa and Manda.
This peaceful island is one of the most popular Kenyan islands with its sweeping white Shela Beach, the distinctive Lamu Museum, and a series of historic archeological sites and ancient ruins.
In recent years, Lamu has opened up as being once again a safe place to holiday, and the rest of the coastline is entirely safe too.
Located along the northern coast, nearest to the Somali border, Lamu Island is known for some of the most beautiful coast and bucket-list beautiful architecture and is a must see. Lamu, particularly Shela Village, remains in the top 5 favourite destinations of all time. It’s a place unlike any other, with a pace that slows down your heartbeat.
There are only 3 cars on Lamu Island and they can’t drive very far, because there’s hardly enough room for 2 people to walk next to each other in some of the little alleyways. Lamu is much more of a culture trip, with a far more laid-back energy and not as many organised activities. Also offers day-trips out to Manda Toto island, and daily sunset dhow safaris that are breathtakingly beautiful, but time on this part of the coast is best spent strolling the beach, enjoying your incredible accommodation, eating as much incredible Swahili food as you can and exploring Shela village and Lamu Old Town.
