Giraffe Manor Hotel: A Unique Experience

Giraffe Manor boutique hotel in Nairobi is an exclusive hotel with a resident herd of wild giraffes, who tend to visit morning and evening, poking their long necks into the windows in the hope of a treat, before retreating to their forest sanctuary. Owned by The Safari Collection, Giraffe Manor Hotel blends extraordinary wildlife encounters with exquisite hospitality and a long-term commitment to giraffe conservation.

The historic manor house is set in 12 acres of private land within 140 acres of indigenous forest in the Langata suburb of Nairobi and is one of Nairobi’s most iconic buildings. It has extraordinary appeal that harks back to the 1930s when visitors first flocked to East Africa to enjoy safaris.

One of the most fascinating things about Giraffe Manor Hotel is its resident herd of Nubian/Rothschild’s giraffes who may visit morning and evening, poking their long necks into the windows in the hope of a treat, before retreating to their forest sanctuary. The Nubian/Rothschild’s species of giraffe was once highly endangered, but Giraffe Manor has long been part of a breeding programme which has successfully grown their numbers in the wild. The story began in the 1970s, when the population of the Nubian subspecies of giraffe (formerly classified as Rothschild’s) had fallen to fewer than 100 in Kenya. Jock and Betty Leslie-Melville, then owners of the manor, founded the African Fund for Endangered Wildlife (AFEW) and started a breeding programme on the grounds. Thanks to their efforts, and continued work by AFEW and The Safari Collection, the population has grown to over 1,000 today.

Today, every stay at Giraffe Manor contributes directly to giraffe conservation. A portion of each guest’s fee supports AFEW, whose Giraffe Centre next door now educates over 50,000 Kenyan school children a year.

Activities and Amenities

This boutique hotel with a herd of wild giraffes allows for close encounters with the world’s tallest mammal. You can also explore the surrounding area, discover local culture, or entertain yourself with our day trips and activities within the manor’s grounds and the local area.

The Retreat: Take a stroll to The Retreat located next door to Giraffe Manor. This is an ideal place to enjoy the serenity of our wellness centre and Daisy’s Café. Indulge in a pampering spa treatment, enjoy the hot tub, sauna, steam room and gym or simply relax in the gardens overlooking the giraffe sanctuary.

Rooms: There are nine superior double rooms, one triple superior room and two family suites. A few of the double rooms have sofa beds suitable for younger children or space for a baby cot. As a residential-style property, each room is unique in size, features and décor.

Dining: Meals are served in the dining room and courtyard space, both of which were designed to accommodate the maximum number of overnight guests. Unlike most hotels, we do not have a traditional ‘à la carte’ restaurant and the kitchen caters only for expected guests, much like a remote safari lodge or private home does.

Conservation and Sustainability

They live freely on 150 acres of indigenous forest, choosing to visit the manor only if and when they wish. Pellets are offered in controlled amounts as a supplement to their natural diet of leaves which they browse from the sanctuary. As much as they enjoy the pellets, they only have access to them during 12 of every 24 hours and tend to wander off when they have had enough.

We work hard to minimise waste and reduce the mileage products travel to reach us by sourcing all food locally. As much as possible, we avoid packaged products, single-use plastics and ingredients containing palm oil. Our aim is to avoid imported goods altogether, reducing our packaged waste while supporting our local economy and celebrating all that is Kenyan.

Important Information for Guests

PLEASE NOTE that check-in/check-out times must be strictly adhered to due to the unique nature of the property. Giraffe Manor does not have a reception area or restaurant for guests to wait in. It is still very much like a family home.

Should guests wish to arrive or depart outside of check-in times, The Retreat next door offers day rooms and day passes for access to all the wellness facilities and the restaurant, subject to availability. The latest pick-up time for your transfer to Giraffe Manor is 11:00 pm.

This means you’ll enjoy all your meals-breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea, and dinner-as well as all drinks (excluding premium spirits, wines, and champagne), laundry service, Wi-Fi, and entry to the AFEW Giraffe Centre. Transfers to and from the manor within Nairobi are included during check-in and check-out times, as well as transfers to nearby attractions and shops.

It is 27 kilometres from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport which takes around 40 minutes to drive (but we always allow longer in case there is traffic).

Rooms and Booking

In 2011, the current owners, Mikey and Tanya Carr-Hartley, built the Garden Manor, which is a charming replica of the Historic Manor. It also has six rooms: Salma, Edd, Arlene, Helen, Kelly, and the Finch Hatton Suite. No matter which part of the manor you’re staying in, the giraffe experience remains the same.

Currently, the Historic Manor is reserved exclusively for guests of The Safari Collection who are staying at our other properties. If the Garden Manor is fully booked for your preferred dates, you might consider a room in the section reserved for guests participating in our circuit. Planning last-minute? Rooms in all sections of the manor can be booked four weeks before your travel date, provided they’re available.

For those who can’t stay with us, visiting the AFEW Giraffe Centre next-door allows you to interact with, feed and photograph the same endangered Nubian giraffes.

Activities for Children

Giraffe Manor has painting activities, several garden games like boules, giant Jenga and a large swing from which the giraffes can be fed. We also have some puzzles, colouring pages and board games including a lovely chess set to enjoy between giraffe feeding. Children might like to enjoy a swim in our 21 metre infinity pool at The Retreat - our wellness centre right next door to Giraffe Manor.

Guests of Giraffe Manor also have complimentary access to the neighbouring Giraffe Centre where children can learn more about different giraffe species and feed them from a raised platform.

Additional Excursions

More adventurous guests may wish to partake in a game drive in the nearby Nairobi National Park, visit a countryside tea estate or embark on a helicopter safari to some of the country’s most magnificent landmarks. Many of our guests also opt to partake in neighbourhood excursions to local shops, museums and restaurants with the family.

Length of Stay

Many people therefore spend only one night at Giraffe Manor, yet they still have a wonderful experience. Those that do stay longer get the chance to really enjoy some of our extra activities and get to know Nairobi’s hidden treasures. We have, on the other hand, had guests stay for as many as seven nights! Generally, we would recommend two nights as the ideal and no more than three nights and then we can certainly help organise the rest of your itinerary around Kenya.

Special Requests and Considerations

Breakfast tables are assigned by management based on safety, traffic flow, group size, and other factors. Guests are not able to reserve specific tables in advance, and staff cannot accept payments for preferred seating. Our breakfast rooms are intimate, allowing for meaningful interactions with the giraffes.

If you’d like to relax before or after your room stay you can head just next door to The Retreat at Giraffe Manor, which offers several options: an Early Bird package for morning arrivals, a Retreat Day Pass, or a full Day Room. Guests not staying at our other properties may book The Retreat as a standalone option (subject to availability within four weeks of travel).

Children: Our child rates are from three years old to 11 years old. At 12 years of age our guests are charged the adult rate.

Other Lodges in Kenya

The Safari Collection also operates a collection of distinct camps and lodges in some of Kenya’s most spectacular locations, including Giraffe Manor, Solio Lodge, Sasaab, Sala’s Camp and Siruai Mobile Camp.

Weddings

We are able to host small weddings with a maximum of 50 guests at The Retreat next door. We do not have set Wedding Packages, but feel free to get in touch for more information. We can also highly recommend a ceremony at one of our sister properties: Sala’s Camp in the Masai Mara, Solio Lodge in Laikipia or Sasaab in Samburu.
