GigaChad: Definition and Origin

The Internet slang term Chad is a generic name used to refer to several types of supposedly dominant male figures: a strong, handsome man who attracts women; an obliviously entitled man; an effortlessly formidable man, and an exceptional instance referred to as a Gigachad.

The GigaChad meme represents the ultimate alpha male archetype.

The Origin of "Chad"

The slang term Chad is based on the male given name Chad. In the early 2000s it began to be used as a humorous generic term for a stereotypical frat boy or jock, and also as a slang insult with the meaning “loser, idiot, jerk.”

The Incel Connection

By the 2010s, the Internet incel community adopted Chad as a stereotype for a particular kind of so-called ‘alpha male’: built, handsome, swaggering, and unjustly irresistible to women (who were referred to using a sexist counterpart stereotype of Stacey). In this subculture, Chad and Stacey became used in memes and other content, bitterly attacking their perceived antagonists.

Within the incel community online, Chad remains used to disparage men and women blamed for various grievances. For example: “Women say they are attracted to sensitive guys, but they all just want Chads.” This use of Chad may be considered offensive due to this community’s connection to misogyny and violent extremist incidents.

Outside of the incel community, it may be used as a mild insult for behavior associated with a hypermasculine or heedlessly cocky man (“That Chad took credit for my idea in the meeting”).

The development and use of Chad is closely associated with an online community known as incels, involuntarily celibate men associated with misogynistic beliefs and extremist ideologies.

The Rise of "Gigachad"

In the early 2020s, the word developed a positive sense, used to praise a man seen as impressive-though often traditionally masculine-in some way. The use of Chad varies greatly based on speaker and context. While often used as a noun, it is also sometimes used attributively (‘chad behavior’), functioning more like an adjective.

We get to this term by combining a billion, “giga,” with “Chad” - a broey, handsome, maybe slightly dumb but incredibly beautiful and confident, man.

Kids are saying the slang word “Gigachad” to mean “the ultimate man,” according to Urban Dictionary. Put differently, he's a handsome, alpha dude with swagger. “Gigachad is based on this concept of being a ‘Chad’ which means you’re just this typical gym bro that’s focused on your physical appearance,” Lindsay said in his video. “And then the word ‘Giga’ means extreme or doing something to an exceptionally high level.”

The term combines 'giga-' (meaning extremely large or impressive) with 'Chad' (internet slang for an attractive, dominant male).

In the next few years, Gigachad’s use spread alongside other chad memes, via bodybuilding forums, more Reddit, and more 4chan. Which is funny, not only for the obvious memeable reasons, but also because he allegedly “doesn’t cooperate with anyone” and “does not know what a podcast is.”

Ernest Khalimov: The Face of GigaChad

The GIGACHAD emote is based on Russian model Ernest Khalimov, who became the face of the 'GigaChad' meme. The meme originated from a 4chan /pol/ board post on October 17, 2017, which identified Khalimov as the original GigaChad.

Here are some photos of a really insanely cut dude from the Instagram account berlin.1969. They were taken by photo artist Krista Sudmalis, aka “female gigachad,” probably in late 2016.

The model’s name is Ernest Khalimov, but he’s very photoshopped, to the point where a lot of people question whether or not Gigachad even counts as a real person.

When we refer to Gigachad, we’re mostly referring to his face (which has come to be known as ‘Chad Face‘), and perfectly chiseled physique.

On October 15, 2017 a link to Krista and Ernest’s photo series “SLEEK’N’TEARS” was posted on reddit/r/bodybuilding, where Redditors gaped in awe and wonder. The following day, another image of Khalimov was reposted to 4chan.

Gigachad Beyond the Meme

Notably, Gigachad’s popularity not only allowed for the creation of its own NcFT, available for purchase anywhere NFTs are sold, But also his own large language model. Like a swole version of ChatGPT, Gab users can log on, and ask Gigachad himself, not to be confused with Ernest, anything they want.

He’s also responsible for a lesser-known spin-off meme-Female Gigachad. If Gigachad is supposed to be about total confidence personified in an extremely fit and muscular human body, then…well…so is Female Gigachad.

The Meaning of Gigachad

If Gigachad is supposed to be about total confidence personified in an extremely fit and muscular human body, then…well…so is Female Gigachad.

The GIGACHAD emote represents the ultimate alpha male archetype, symbolizing supreme confidence, masculinity, and dominance. It depicts a hyper-masculine figure with exaggerated facial features, typically shown in black and white with strong contrast to emphasize the chiseled jawline and intense expression. This emote is used to represent someone who is exceptionally confident, powerful, or impressive in their actions or statements.

In a lot of ways, Gigachad can represent a level of confidence most of us will only ever dream of.

It’s reasonable and probably not uncommon to be a little wary of and fascinated by any human living their life with a godlike level of certainty. Which maybe explains both the internet’s attraction to and derision of an unattainably godlike human form.

It’s reasonable to be a little wary of and fascinated by any human living their life with a godlike level of certainty. Oh beautiful, perfectly fit people. We all kind of wish we could look that good, but for most of us, we kind of wish for pizza night and reasoned debate even more. Maybe the stoicism needed to attain that rock-hard abdomen would also bequeath to us a level of enlightenment beyond mortal bounds.

Gigachad and "Looksmaxing"

“Gigachad” is connected to “looksmaxing” a beauty trend that Urban Dictionary says is the “physical improvement of a person’s body - in terms of development of facial features or muscular improvement - in order to make oneself more attractive or easier to like.”

The “looksmaxing” movement has churned out Gen Z trends like “mewing," in which teens stick their tongues on the roofs of their mouths, believing it firms up their jawline (it doesn’t, according to the American Association of Orthodontists). But wait, there’s more: If you attempt to engage a teen in conversation while they are "mewing," they “shush” you, then drag their finger along their own jawline.

“They have achieved ultimate alpha ‘sigma’ status due to their prominent chin and their good looks which they got from ‘mewing.’ So, a Gigachad is just the next iteration of being ‘sigma’ which just means that you’re the best of the best of the best - the ultimate gym bro.”

Chad in the Manosphere

The manosphere is obsessed with status, power, prestige and hierarchy. The idea of alphas and betas is central to this. Originally developed by biologist David Mech in his early work on wolf packs, the “alpha” was argued to be the most socially dominant male. Mech has since refuted this account as overly simplistic.

Becoming an alpha is an aspirational goal for many men who engage with manosphere content. Alphas are in charge, have their pick of sexual partners and have ultimate control, both of themselves and others. Betas are the polar opposite: physically and psychologically weak, sexually unattractive, timid, submissive, meek and generally lacking in the qualities necessary to attain “real” manhood.

Chads are the “ultimate alpha” - the ultra-masculine, virile, powerful and sexually attractive man to whom Stacys and other women flock. The term “gigachad” refers to the most alpha of alpha males.

Stacys are an idealisation of femininity - a hyper-attractive, sexually desirable, promiscuous but vapid woman. She is ultimately unobtainable, especially to men who are not Chads.

Key Manosphere Terms

Understanding what manosphere terms mean can help teachers and parents start conversations with young men who are engaging with manosphere and male supremacist content. Recognising how language and ideology are connected can help with deradicalisation efforts, or ideally prevent radicalisation in the first place.

Here are some common terms:

  • Red pill: Seeing the world as it "really is," understanding the so-called “real” nature of women’s behaviour and dating preferences.
  • Alpha: The most socially dominant male.
  • Beta: Physically and psychologically weak, sexually unattractive, timid, submissive, meek.
  • Stacy: A hyper-attractive, sexually desirable, promiscuous but vapid woman.
  • Awalt: (Not) all women are like that. Used to ascribe negative stereotypes to women, suggesting they are all vapid, insincere, sexually promiscuous, driven by emotions rather than rationality, motivated by financial gain and more.

It is clear that manosphere language is contributing to an increasingly politicised and fractious form of gender relations.

Here is a table summarizing the key aspects of the GigaChad phenomenon:
