The Internet slang term Chad (or chad) is a generic name used to refer to several types of supposedly dominant male figures: a strong, handsome man who attracts women; an obliviously entitled man; an effortlessly formidable man, and an exceptional instance referred to as a Gigachad.
In its simplest form, a “Chad” is a sexually active “alpha male,” according to The Cut. The development and use of Chad is closely associated with an online community known as incels, involuntarily celibate men associated with misogynistic beliefs and extremist ideologies.
Let's delve deeper into the origins, meaning, and implications of this term.
Origins in Incel Culture
The term originated within the horrendously backward incel (involuntary celibate) culture and is often used to denote the opposite of an incel. Whereas an incel sees himself as unable to find a romantic or sexual partner despite desiring one-and therefore ends up demonizing women-a “Chad” gets all the women because of his superior appearance, confidence, and physical prowess.
According to Chris Haywood, Ph.D., a Reader of Critical Masculinity Studies at Newcastle University and author of Men, Masculinity and Contemporary Dating, incels often use a rating system to explain and justify their lack of romantic and sexual competence. There are Alpha Fux (a.k.a. Chads), Beta Bux (older men with money), and Sub5 males (on a scale of 1-10, incels often position themselves lower than 5).

In their minds, Chads are out there “stealing” all the available women. In simpler terms, incels are envious of these so-called Chads for being able to sleep with and date a lot of women, and because of this, they resent them. They also see Chads as inhibiting their ability to have sex and find a girlfriend.
To them, Chads are winners of a genetic lottery, popular with women out of sheer dumb luck. This, in turn, harbors further resentment. “Because that [idealized] body is out of reach, their inability to get what they desire manifests itself in the form of hatred,” Haywood says.
Evolution of the Term
The slang term Chad is based on the male given name Chad. In the early 2000s it began to be used as a humorous generic term for a stereotypical frat boy or jock, and also as a slang insult with the meaning “loser, idiot, jerk.” By the 2010s, the Internet incel community adopted Chad as a stereotype for a particular kind of so-called ‘alpha male’: built, handsome, swaggering, and unjustly irresistible to women (who were referred to using a sexist counterpart stereotype of Stacey).
In the early 2020s, the word developed a positive sense, used to praise a man seen as impressive-though often traditionally masculine-in some way. In this subculture, Chad and Stacey became used in memes and other content, bitterly attacking their perceived antagonists. The use of Chad varies greatly based on speaker and context.
While often used as a noun, it is also sometimes used attributively (‘chad behavior’), functioning more like an adjective. Within the incel community online, Chad remains used to disparage men and women blamed for various grievances.

In internet slang, a Chad is typically a confident, attractive, muscular, outgoing guy who easily gets attention - especially from women. That’s the basic definition. In some corners of the internet, “Chad” represents the shallow ideal of masculinity - good-looking but not deep, successful but maybe not kind.
The term Chad started as a stereotypical name for a preppy or popular guy. Alpha/Sigma male: These terms rate men based on confidence, dominance, or independence.
In 2008, an Urban Dictionary user added an entry on Chad that described him as a young, white man who is popular with women. In 2013, Chad resurfaced as part of the “Chad Thundercock” meme that centered on stereotypical alpha males. Often shortened to just Chad, this hyper-masculine stereotype was a contrast to the stereotype of antisocial beta males (“virgins”) that supposedly make up the majority of 4chan users or incel communities. These “Chad vs. Virgin” memes have further popularized the name Chad as an exaggerated stereotype of an alpha male.
The word Chad seemed to gain mainstream traction (and its joke-y, ironic usage) thanks to a popular 2017 meme known as "The Chad Stride." The Chad Stride depicted how an arrogant Chad walks like an entitled D-bag. According to KnowYourMeme.com, the drawing was created in opposition to the "The Virgin Walk" illustration, which depicts how an incel walks without confidence.

The Dangers of Using the Term
Is being called a "Chad" a good thing? No. When non-incels use the slang term, it's not only used in connection to stereotypically attractive men; the word is also used to describe a person (or story) they simply find frustrating, or disagree with.
Whether it's coming from the fucked-up incel community or on regular-person social media, the word Chad reinforces the toxic ideology that incel men are somehow victims in a system of oppression entirely of their own invention. It also puts so-called Chads on a pedestal, Beaton says-“neither of these scenarios propagates a meaningful solution, nor do they empower anyone involved."
Beaton suggests we stop using the word altogether, given that it upholds a belief system that demonizes women and perpetuates dangerous notions of toxic masculinity. Or we could repurpose the word to mean something different.
“Oftentimes, the best defense against something damaging like this is to rewrite its meaning and create a healthier mainstream narrative, one that brings unification rather than separation,” Beaton says.
Chad in Popular Culture
A photo of a Chicago Police Officer sporting an extreme hairstyle has gone viral for its resemblance to the popular "Chad" meme and the Cartoon Network character Johnny Bravo - but the widely-shared image has actually been altered to create the iconic look.
Examples of the term's use in various contexts:
- wait, [actor] peter dinklage isn't vegan anymore? good, what a chad.
- “This isn’t customer service. This is customer abuse.” Oh what a chad.
- This guy on my flight. -Abhishek Mallick, Sportskeeda, 10 Jul. -Kevin J.
- “Women say they are attracted to sensitive guys, but they all just want Chads.”
- “That Chad took credit for my idea in the meeting”
The Chad/Virgin Dichotomy
The Chad, comparatively, has his legs splayed wide, the bulge in his crotch central to his design. His trousers are neon green, once again drawing the eyes back to the bulge, and he back is ram-rod straight. He gestures with his wide hands, his muscles highlighted in glorious squiggly MS Paint pixel art. His highlighter-pink tank top brings even more attention to his figure. His hair and his shoes are the same bleached neon yellow. His eyes are half-lidded, knowing, and they meet the eyes of the viewer, instead of the eyes of the virgin which are fixed straight ahead.
This binary opposition is familiar to anyone who considers themselves even slightly online. There are virgin/chad dichotomisations present in every online community, mocking the original image.
The incel/chad anxiety is an anxiety of twisted sexual aspiration, but not necessarily to be Chad.

The Question of Homosexuality
Being this fixated on the sexual prowess of other men feels psychosexually motivated. It can be argued that its solely envy - incels see Chads living lives they consider themselves incapable of accessing, and therefore they find an outlet in fantasies of random violence or acts of stochastic terror - but the lascivious glee that the anonymous writer of the car-wreck post takes in being Stacey cuckolded by horror before she is about to fuck Chad is too tangibly erotic to ignore.
Men being envious of the penises of other men is nothing new. There’s even a pseudoscientific medical condition - so-called ‘Small Penis Syndrome’ - invented to pathologise it. Often, perceiving oneself as having a small penis (and the existence of the small penis can only exist as a privation of the large penis) is generative of anxiety. Creating Chad Thundercock is a way to reify that anxiety. The largeness of Chad’s penis is yet another reason why the incel can never get the girl.
Who Uses Chad?
Most teens using “Chad” today aren’t involved in incel forums, but it’s helpful to know the history. The word itself isn’t dangerous - but the mindset behind it can be. If your child is joking about someone being a “Chad,” it might just be playful teasing. Ask what they mean by “Chad” and how they feel about it. Some kids are just parroting memes.
While the term may seem harmless on the surface, understanding its origins and the potential for misuse is crucial in promoting healthier online interactions and challenging harmful stereotypes.
