The Chilling Plot of "Gaslight": A Psychological Thriller

There are some movies that simply traverse the limits of time. Movies that never age and always speak sublime truths to us all. These are the movies that will last forever. These are the movies we long to discuss.

Strange drama of a captive sweetheart! A newlywed fears she's going mad when strange things start happening at the family mansion.

What's that? You say there's a movie called Gaslight? Sorry, dear. Never heard of it. You must have imagined the whole thing.

Gaslighting: The Core of the Narrative

Gaslighting is specifically the manipulation of a person so that they begin to doubt their own mental health. That is to say, gaslighting is a tactic of abusers to make a victim doubt their understanding of the abuse they are experiencing. It comes in many forms.

While some gaslight another person intentionally to traumatize them, others do it as a means of protecting themselves from the consequences of their abusive actions.

The Impact of Performance

That this film became synonymous with a kind of abuse is a commentary on Ingrid Bergman's performance. She makes you feel her trauma as she struggles with her depression and confusion; she makes you feel not sorry for her but terrified for her.

“Because I am mad, I have betrayed you."

One of the most effective psychological thrillers I've ever seen. Beautifully shot and paced so meekly compared to modern head-trips that it's so much easier to fall into the movie's rhythm, and to get sucked along with its deceit. Charles Boyer is an all-time villain here.

The feminist manifesto of 1944. Miss Bergman SERVED.
