Atlanta, Georgia, is home to one of the country’s largest Ethiopian communities.
In 2000, nearly 5,500 Ethiopians called Atlanta home. Today, that number has more than doubled, making Atlanta home to one of the country’s largest Ethiopian communities. Immigrants brought their families, their traditions, and their food.
The restaurant landscape is just one window into international Atlanta, but it is extremely important. It signals that new communities are working to carve out space, create opportunity, and share the best parts of their homeplaces with fellow Atlantans. Reporter Kayla Stewart shares the story of Atlanta’s Ethiopian community with visits to three restaurants-Piassa Restaurant and Market, Ledet, and Desta Ethiopian Kitchen. All three places serve traditional Ethiopian food to their customers, and Desta Ethiopian Kitchen has modified their menu in a way that accommodates Ethiopian and American influences.
The Ethiopian Community Association in Atlanta (ECAA) has a rich history rooted in the commitment of a group of thoughtful Ethiopians who recognized the challenges faced by new arrivals in the Atlanta area.
In 1983, these dedicated individuals gathered together with a common goal: to assist their fellow Ethiopians in adjusting to the new environment and building a better future.

With determination and a shared sense of purpose, they established the Ethiopian Community Association and officially incorporated it as a Georgia non-profit organization. This pivotal moment marked the beginning of our organization's journey to serve, empower, and advance the interests of Ethiopian and Ethiopian American individuals and families in Atlanta and its surrounding areas.
In recognition of our commitment to social impact and community development, the Ethiopian Community Association received a significant milestone: a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status from the United States Internal Revenue Service (IRS). This achievement not only solidified our dedication to making a positive difference in the lives of Ethiopians and Ethiopian Americans but also enabled us to enhance our efforts and expand our reach.
Since then, the Ethiopian Community Association has evolved into a dynamic and influential organization that works tirelessly to help facilitate the integration of the next generation into American society.
Our focus is on fostering a vibrant, well-informed, and connected Ethiopian American community while preserving our shared ancient and rich cultural heritage.
Through our various programs, initiatives, and collaborative partnerships, we have been able to create a supportive environment where Ethiopians and Ethiopian Americans can find the resources, guidance, and assistance they need to thrive in their adopted home.
