Signature Dishes
At Enatye, the menu is a feast for the senses. Guests can indulge in a variety of traditional dishes that highlight bold spices and fresh ingredients. Signature dishes, such as injera, lentils, and various meats, create a feast for the senses.
Enatye Special Kitfo
One of the standout dishes is the Enatye Special Kitfo, featuring lean ground beef harmoniously blended with Ethiopian herbal butter (kibe), cardamom, and a perfectly balanced spicy chili powder (Mitmita). This dish, accompanied by the traditional injera, offers a sublime taste that transports you straight to the heart of Ethiopia.
Vegetarian Options
Vegetarian options are equally tantalizing, such as the Shiro Wot, a delightful chickpea powder stew infused with spicy peppers and garlic, making it a fulfilling choice that captures the essence of this unique cuisine.
Doro Wot
Among the stew entrées, the Doro Wot, a chicken stew infused with rich spices, stands out, offering a comforting yet bold flavor experience. Each bite unravels layers of sautéed onions, garlic, and chili, crowned with a boiled egg and wrapped in injera, a staple flatbread that is integral to Ethiopian dining culture.
Family and Community
The restaurant is a family business, run by Eskinder Kifetew and his brother and sister. Like many restaurateurs, he doesn’t have much time outside of work to explore the region, but he’s come to love it all the same. Community involvement plays an essential role, as Enatye regularly participates in local events, fostering connections within the neighborhood.

I like the environment. The area is really quiet. You don’t see any crime, you don’t see any robbery. Also, I don’t see other Ethiopian restaurants. I have a lot of community in this area, but most Ethiopians cook at home. Americans and other people don’t know how to make my food, so they have to come and see me. Also, I’m close by to the airport too, to get my own stuff. All my spice comes from home. My mom is the one preparing all the spice.
Adapting to Challenges
When the pandemic hit, Enatye Ethiopian Restaurant in Herndon switched to a takeout-only model. Ethiopian food is intended to stretch out and unfurl its loveliness languidly. It’s not meant to be contained in a takeout box. But these are unprecedented times and Kifetew is making do.
NoVA food lovers have spoken and they can’t get enough of the ultra-fresh Ethiopian food at Enatye (currently only offering takeout and curbside pickup). The Herndon restaurant is still only doing takeout, but its vegetarian fare is just as good at home. It’s not a perfectly plated creation, but the above photo, dear reader, that’s a portrait of ingenuity.
I don’t [work with a] delivery company because they take a lot of the percentage. I hired drivers so I can do delivery myself. We process everything online. It’s going to take a while to open the restaurants.
Combo Meals
There are three sizes of the combo. Plates are available with five, seven or 10 different vegetable dishes. All are piled atop a round of injera, just like they would be at the restaurant, but more tightly crowded. It turns out, this isn’t a bad thing.

The combo meals are highlighted for offering exceptional value, proving that sharing this vibrant cuisine with loved ones creates unforgettable memories. I enjoyed swiping together a few different stews on a single piece of the bread. I ordered the $19.50 seven-item combo.
All the vegetable dishes were flavorful, with a buttery richness courtesy of the ghee that’s an ingredient in many Ethiopian dishes. My motto when it comes to that region’s cuisine is “the redder the better,” and it definitely held true in the case. My favorite stew by far was the misir wot, lentils made ruddy with berbere, the spice mix that gives Ethiopian dishes like doro wot their trademark hue and earthy burn.
Enatye is doing its best to keep going during a tough time. And when the food is that good, I don’t mind doing Meatless Monday at home.
Catering and Celebrations
Bring the unique taste of Ethiopia to your next event. Our catering is ideal for parties, celebrations, and special occasions.
Host your next celebration at Enatye or let us bring the feast to you. Authentic dishes and vibrant ambiance for unforgettable memories.
The Ethiopian Coffee Ceremony
The restaurant features traditional Ethiopian coffee ceremonies, showcasing the cultural significance of coffee in Ethiopian society.
Right here [in the same shopping plaza] we have Weird Brothers Coffee. It roasts its own coffee, that’s the thing I like about it. It makes its own fresh roast so the taste is better. Then there is my friend at Scoop of the Hill. He makes macarons.
