Sinai Peninsula Bus Crash

A traffic accident Saturday involving a microbus and a larger bus left at least 16 people dead and 18 others injured in Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula. The crash took place when a microbus collided with a public transportation bus on a road linking the city of Tor in southern Sinai to the city of Suez, the Health Ministry said in a statement on Saturday. The collision happened 10 kilometers (about 6 miles) from Tor, police said. The casualties were taken to a hospital in El-Tor in southern Sinai, some 300 kilometres southeast of the capital Cairo. The Health Ministry said it deployed at least 13 ambulances to the scene and that the injured were taken to hospitals in southern Sinai.

University Student Bus Crash

A bus carrying university students crashed and overturned on a highway in northeastern Egypt Monday, killing 12 people and injuring 33 others, the health ministry said in a statement. Students from the Suez-based Galala University were on board. Local media reported they were returning from their classes to their dormitory in Ain Sokhna resort, using the new Galala highway, when the accident happened, and that the driver was arrested as part of an investigation into the crash. The ministry didn’t reveal what caused the accident. The statement Monday night said 28 ambulances rushed to the site and transported the injured to the Suez Medical Complex, but didn’t disclose their condition. Minister of Health, Khaled Abdel-Ghaffar, and Minister of High Education, Ayman Ashour, expressed their condolences to the families of the students.

Desert Highway Bus Crash

At least 23 people were killed and 30 more left injured Tuesday when a bus traveling down a desert highway in eastern Egypt slammed into a truck, officials said. CBS News' Ahmed Shawkat said the accident took place in the early hours of Tuesday morning as the bus, heading for Cairo, crashed into the back of a truck that had pulled over so the driver could fix a flat tire, according to a statement provided by officials in the Minya Governorate. Video from the scene posted online by local authorities showed much of the front and one side of the bus completely destroyed. Ambulances rushed to the scene to transfer the injured to hospitals in Minya. The Health Ministry said at least 16 of the injured were discharged from hospitals after receiving treatment.
