Delta State was created on August 27, 1991, out of the former Bendel State. The Bendel was derived from Benin and Delta, the two provinces that made up the former Midwest Region created by plebiscite in August 1963 from the Western Region. When the military regime announced new states on May 27, 1967, the Midwest region became a State. The name was changed to Bendel in February 1976.
Delta State lies roughly between longitude 5.00′ and 6.45 East and latitude 5.00 and 6.30 North. The total land area of the state is 17,440 sq km, and about one third of this is swampy and waterlogged. Delta is bounded on the North by Edo State, and on the East by Anambra State on the south by Rivers and Bayelsa states. Delta State is one of the major producers of oil and gas in Nigeria. The state is located in the oil-rich Niger Delta region of Nigeria and produces about 30% of the country’s total oil and gas, which accounts for a significant amount of current foreign exchange earnings.
