Debre Berhan University: A History of Growth and Development

Debre Berhan University (DBU) is a public university located in Debre Birhan, Amhara Region, Ethiopia. It is one of thirteen new Universities which were established in 1999 E.C (2007) by the Ethiopian government.

The foundation of the university was laid down in May 2005 and the building of the first phase was started in May 2006. Instruction began in January 2007 with the enrolment of 725 students in the Faculty of Education with two streams, namely Businesses Education and Natural Science teaching.

In the academic year of 2007/8, three additional Faculties (Business and Economics, Health Science and Agriculture) were opened, and the enrolment reached 2483.

Furthermore, the university broadened its program and enrolled 393 summer students and 500 Extension/evening students in 2006 and 2007 respectively.

Officially recognized by the Ministry of Education of Ethiopia, Debre Berhan University (DBU) is a coeducational Ethiopian higher education institution. Debre Berhan University (DBU) offers courses and programs leading to officially recognized higher education degrees in several areas of study.

Established in 2007, Debre Berhan University is a non-profit public higher education institution located in the small city of Debre Berhan (population range of 50,000-249,999 inhabitants), Amhara Region.

DBU is recognized as an Applied Science University since 2020, offering Bachelor and Master’s degree programs designed to enhance employability and practical skills.

Academic Structure and Programs

DBU hosts two institutes (covering health and technology/engineering) and six colleges covering the various sciences.

DBU’s College of Agriculture and Natural Resource Sciences currently (as of 2019) includes Agricultural Economics, Animal Science, Horticulture, Natural resource management and Plant science departments in under graduate programs and six post graduate programs (Agronomy, Animal Nutrition, Animal Production, Plant Protection, Soil Science and Soil and Water Conservation).
