This article provides detailed information about the Consular Report of Birth Abroad (CRBA) application process at the U.S. Embassy in Nairobi, Kenya. A CRBA is a document that proves a child born abroad to a U.S. citizen parent is a U.S. citizen.
Eligibility
A child is eligible for a CRBA if they were born abroad to a U.S. citizen parent(s) who acquired citizenship at birth and meet the requirements of the Immigration and Nationality Act, Sections 301 or 309.
Either parent may apply for a Consular Report of Birth Abroad of a Citizen of the United States of America (CRBA) on behalf of their minor child. Once a child reaches the age of 18, he or she is no longer eligible to receive a CRBA certificate.
Children born to U.S. citizens who did not meet the transmission requirements for citizenship at birth are not eligible for a CRBA.
When to Apply
You must submit your child’s CRBA application before their 18th birthday.

- Evidence of U.S. Citizenship: Birth Certificate, Consular Report of Birth Abroad, Certificate of Naturalization, or Certificate of Citizenship.

Bring the original documents and 1 photocopy of each.
- Medical Records: Medical records, ultrasound reports, birth report from hospital, and photos of the mother during pregnancy and after birth are all helpful to establish the biological relationship between the mother and child.

Attending the Appointment
For children under the age of 16, both parents/legal guardians are required to come in person. Complete, but do not sign!
If one parent cannot attend, they must complete a Statement of Consent (Form DS-3053) and have it notarized. The non-attending parent must complete a Statement of Consent document to apply for a passport for children under the age of 16.
The Statement of Consent document is only valid for 90 days after the date of signature. You should use eCRBA to create your case.
The non-attending parent can visit a U.S. embassy or consulate and send the original to the parent attending the interview, with 1 photocopy of the front and back side of the photo ID used during notarization.
