The Origin and Evolution of the "Virgin vs. Chad" Meme

The "Virgin vs. Chad" meme, also known as "Virgin Walk," is a comparison series that contrasts "virgin" men with low self-confidence to their "Chad Thundercock" counterparts. In certain circles of the internet, such as 4chan, Reddit, and various forums, there's a perception that men can be divided into lonely, awkward virgins and powerful, sexually active "Chads."

It’s usually the self-identified virgins selling this trope, and they’re only kind of joking.

The Original Meme

The original "The Virgin Walk" image first appeared on 4chan, presenting a collection of negative traits associated with "virgin" posture. This was followed by the "Chad Stride" edit, which inverted and exaggerated the original traits to create an absurd caricature.

The "Virgin" archetype embodies insecurity, poor posture, and a fear of social interaction, while the "Chad" archetype represents cockiness, entitlement, and a strong jawline. While it did degrade into those awful soyjak memes we all know and hate because that is the nature of the internet, I feel like it's worth remembering that in the original image that spawned this entire trend, you're supposed to laugh at Chad.

The following day, Redditor PyrusSolus submitted an Imgur gallery containing images from the 4chan thread to /r/4chan. Meanwhile, a collection of the images were highlighted in a thread on the BodyBuilding Forums.

VIRGIN VS CHAD MEMES

Evolution of the Meme

The "Virgin vs. Chad" meme has evolved into various forms, including those that classify popular characters as either Virgins or Chads. A further iteration of the jokes makes fun of popular characters by classifying them as Virgins or Chads.

As one Tumblr user put it, “people taking virgin _____ and chad ________ memes completely serious on their face when the chad is supposed to be outrageously over the top and exaggerated for absurdist humor value is probably the only shit even funnier than virgin/chad memes.”

But when the meme leaked out of r9k and onto other sites, it becomes completely absurd.

Fan Interpretations

The meme has also inspired fanfiction and fan art, with some seeing the Virgin and Chad as a loving, fictional couple. Tumblr, where fanfiction is just part of the drinking water, discovered the two characters and put its own spin on them.

Another interesting dynamic occurred once Chad and the Virgin made it out of 4chan: people started “shipping” them-i.e., some now see the Virgin and Chad as a loving, fictional couple.

Similarities to the ‘Me vs. other girls’ meme

The best analogy is to an old Tumblr meme, “Me vs. Other Girls.” It carried the same resentment as the Virgin vs. Chad meme.

In both cases, the message was that archetypes don’t have to define people, and we’re only hurting ourselves when we can’t look past them.

The "Soy vs. Chad" Comparison

A later evolution of the “Virgin vs. Chad” meme is the “Soy vs. Chad” comparison. In this form, a figure drawn amateurishly in black and white, known as a “Soyjack,” is shown face to face with a figure, usually in profile and portrayed in a more polished style with a calm expression, known as a “Yes Chad.” By contrast, the “Soy,” who often grimaces or weeps, articulates a point of view that the meme as a whole mocks or dismisses.

Use in White Nationalist Contexts

Memes have been an important strategic tool for the white nationalist movement, particularly during the 2016 United States Presidential race. The ease with which memes can be spread online and their defiance of definitive interpretation make them effective for promoting hateful ideas.

The ubiquity and accessibility of meme culture means that many young people will encounter the Greco-Roman world through memes before they ever set foot in a classroom to study antiquity in any formal way.

A meme comparing the “Virgin Minoans” with the “Chad Dorians” elevates the Dorian identity to special status and thus indulges in the myth of the Dorian invasion that white nationalists have long used to racialize the ancient Greeks as white.

Slang Term Chad

The slang term Chad has historically been applied in different contexts. The term has come into use in incel forums and as internet slang to refer to sexually active, supposedly genetically superior men, or "alpha males". In online animation drawings in the manosphere, a Chad is often depicted as a muscular blond man with very pronounced masculine features.

Chad is the counterpart of the Virgin and the most iconic character in the Chadiverse. He is known for his comically dominant stride, athletic physique, triangular hair, big bulge and bright neon clothing.

"Gigachad" is a related internet meme that uses black-and-white photographs of a muscular male model.

Chad is blessed with an Essence of Chad, the focal point of all their chadliness.

Chad is the simplest character of the Chadiverse, and is the majority of inhabitants. On March 25, 2017, an anonymous user on the 4Chan board, r9k, made the original The Virgin Walk." Shortly thereafter, another anonymous user posted the now-famous "The Chad Stride" image in response to the Virgin Walk.

Chad's notable features include his beetle-like stride, triangular hair, physique, bulge, and iconic clothing, most famously his $3000 Giuseppe Zanoti highlighter boots, which always stay on.
