Weiberg had been working without a contract since the end of June, leading to questions about his status. However, those questions have now been answered with the approval of this new agreement.

OSU President Jim Hess emphasized Weiberg's leadership during a transformative period in college athletics. “Chad is providing strong, steady leadership during one of the most transformative periods in college athletics history,” Hess said in a statement. “He has the ability to navigate complex challenges and keep our student-athletes and programs at the forefront.”

Weiberg's Background and Challenges

Before his promotion to athletic director in the summer of 2021, Weiberg served as deputy AD under then-athletic director Mike Holder from 2017-21. He took over at a time when the OSU athletic department had been operating at a net loss because of limited funding and revenue through the COVID-19 pandemic. He rebuilt the financial structure of the department while also guiding the university through some of the most significant changes college athletics has ever faced.

These changes include conference realignment, the implementation of name, image and likeness operations, and the revenue-sharing model.

Weiberg is also the school’s first athletic director to serve on the NCAA Division I basketball committee. He fired football coach Mike Gundy last month, parting with him early in his 21st season in Stillwater.

“Oklahoma State is a special place, and our coaches and staff are committed to ensuring our student-athletes have every resource and opportunity to compete at the highest level,” Weiberg said in the statement. “The future is bright for Cowboy and Cowgirl Athletics.”
