Gregory Chad Wallin-Reed was sentenced Thursday to spend from 84 years and eight months to life in state prison for the 2011 murder of Rory McGuire, 20, of Susanville. The sentence was delivered in Plumas Superior Court by Judge Ira Kaufman.
The sentence included 50 years to life for first-degree murder and 34 years, eight months for seven other felony counts that range from firing at an occupied vehicle, assault with a deadly weapon and possession of an illegal assault rifle.
Wallin-Reed, 38, will be eligible for parole in 2092, said David Hollister, Plumas County district attorney.
Before Kaufman read the sentence, Faith Fox, McGuire’s sister, took the stand to address Wallin-Reed directly, calling him one of the “horrible people in this world.” Another sister, Shawna McGuire, described pain “that never goes away ... there is no closure or moving on from this,” she said.
Wallin-Reed, who did not testify at his monthlong trial, sat stoically through the hourlong hearing until the very end, when he read a prepared statement addressed to McGuire’s family and friends. “I pray ... that the Lord will somehow give you the strength to forgive me,” he said.

Last month, a Plumas County jury needed less than three hours to find Wallin-Reed guilty of murdering McGuire in the case that stems from a July 2, 2011, chase from Wallin-Reed’s remote cabin near Janesville along back roads leading toward Antelope Lake.
After he caught a carload of six men stealing a solar light from his property, Wallin-Reed pursued the vehicle driven by McGuire for eight miles, firing as many as 26 shots at it.
When McGuire missed a road that would have taken him to the lake, he turned his car around in a meadow, where it came to a stop. Wallin-Reed approached the car and fired into it.
Investigators found 12 cartridges from an assault weapon and seven from a handgun, according to trial testimony.

McGuire was shot in the head and died two days later.
