Chad Smith, born on October 25, 1961, is an American musician, best known as the drummer for the rock band Red Hot Chili Peppers. Smith joined the Chili Peppers in December 1988. He has since become the band's longest-serving drummer, playing on ten of their studio albums. In addition to his work with the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Smith is also the drummer for the hard rock supergroup Chickenfoot, formed in 2008, and Chad Smith's Bombastic Meatbats, an all-instrumental band created in 2007.
In 2013, Spin magazine listed Smith as one of the "100 Greatest Drummers of Alternative Music". Readers of Rhythm magazine voted Smith and Red Hot Chili Pepper bassist Flea as the fourth-greatest rhythm section ever. Smith is also known for his charity work, helping young musicians and supporting music education in schools.
Let's delve into Chad Smith's discography, specifically focusing on the 1990s, a defining decade for both him and the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
In 1988, the Red Hot Chili Peppers needed a new drummer. Smith was the last person to audition. The band was very impressed by his drumming. Within a few months, he was recording his first album with the band, Mother's Milk, which was released in 1989.
The Golden Era: Red Hot Chili Peppers in the 1990s
The Red Hot Chili Peppers produced three albums in the 1990s, two of which are considered among their finest, while one is often seen as one of their weakest. This decade was a time of great music and significant intra-band drama. The Peppers produced 3 albums in the 90’s. Two of which would be considered among their finest. One of which would be considered one of their weakest.

Not only is this a time of great music for the band, it’s also a time of great drama. Most notably in their first album of the decade:
Blood Sugar Sex Magik (1991)
After their contract with EMI ended following "Mother's Milk," the band switched to Warner Brothers and sought a new producer, ultimately choosing Rick Rubin. The album was recorded in a Laurel Canyon mansion, creating a unique and possibly haunted atmosphere.
Stylistically, guitarist John Frusciante explored a silky guitar tone, while Flea moved away from slap bass lines to more melodic lines. Anthony Kiedis evolved to use a more poetic, emotionally honest lyrical style.
The album was released on September 24, 1991, the same day as Nirvana’s Nevermind, and A Tribe Called Quest’s Low End Theory. "Give It Away" became the Peppers’ first #1 single and earned them their first Grammy. The tour began shortly after the album’s release, but Frusciante's frustrations with fame led to his departure in the middle of the European leg.
This album is known for its hits, but the most rewarding deep cuts in the Peppers’ discography are in this record. It's well known for its hits, but I think the most rewarding deep cuts in the Peppers’ discography are in this record. “Sir Psycho Sexy” is arguably my favorite Peppers song, and it’s a lifelong dream to hear them play “Mellowship Slinky” live one day.

One Hot Minute (1995)
In the wake of Frusciante’s exit, the Peppers hired former Jane’s Addiction guitarist, Dave Navarro. Navarro began performing with the Peppers in 1993, bringing a heavier style to the group.
With international fame on the rise, it was inevitable that a Peppers album would sell. But it was not inevitable that it would be loved. Dave Navarro joins the band
This album is filled with tight-fisted struggle - and in that there are surprisingly beautiful moments, both on the sentimental side and the heavy side.
The recording process was reportedly a slog, with Navarro being less inclined to jam-based songwriting, and Kiedis not finding the same chemistry he found with Frusciante when it came to matching music to his lyrics.

This album often gets panned by critics and is either “love it or hate it” with fans. Frusciante even claims he has never listened to the album. But my taste for it has grown over the years, (and is also largely dependent on my mood). If I want the heavier side of the Chili Peppers, I come to this album and Mother’s Milk.
Recommended Songs: "Aeroplane", "Walkabout", "Stretch You Out"
Californication (1999)
Both musically and in the Peppers’ story arc, this album shines. After entering rehab at the behest of his friends, Frusciante began his road to recovery in 1998. At the same time (post-Navarro firing), Flea approached him with a request to rejoin the band.
John rejoined the band in late 1998 and began rehearsals shortly after.
The album took a more melodic and stripped down approach compared to their earlier music. Much of this was due to Frusciante’s influence. In the years of his addiction and recovery, Frusciante states that he had to work to regain his virtuosic ability, and that along the way he developed a simpler playing style that was more exciting to him than his old Hendrix-inspired style.
Despite the crunchiness of the final master, Californication is regarded by many as the Peppers’ best album.
The album was an immediate success, and “Scar Tissue” went on to win a Grammy for Best Rock Song in 2000.
