Chad R. Miller, Ph.D., is a Professor of Economic Development in the College of Business and Economic Development. He also serves as the Director of the Master of Science of Economic Development program and Assistant Director of the Center for Logistics, Trade, and Transportation (CLTT).

His extensive work experience includes managing shipping and global distribution for American companies based in China and Vietnam. He was also an Army Officer stationed in the Pacific Rim. Prior to joining the IPD, Chad completed a doctorate in Pharmacology at Yale University focusing on cell signaling specificity and rational engineering of kinases.

Dr. Miller’s areas of horticulture interest include topics related to ornamental crop production-both in the greenhouse and nursery context, geophytes (or bulbs such as tulip, lilies, dahlias and iris) and general ornamental plant physiology. He will be teaching two undergraduate courses; Ornamental Landscape Plants I and II.

Dr. Miller grew up in a small town in northwest Wisconsin. His interest for horticulture began when he was about twelve years old, when a neighbor lady gave him some flower bulbs-namely dahlias, gladiolus and cannas. He enrolled at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls (UWRF) in horticulture, and had a great mentor and advisor, Dr. Terry Ferriss. After UWRF, Miller enrolled at Cornell University for a M.S. and Ph.D., working with Drs.

I have worked on developing a multidisciplinary research program related to landscape and greenhouse plant production. Throughout the course of my career, I have been working to develop my Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) skills. Engaging in SoTL research assists in greater understanding how students learn in any specific course.

Miller did a couple of internships, one in Californiain plant breeding and one in the Netherlands for greenhouse cut flower production-both of which had a significant impact on his education.

Miller has always enjoyed the academic setting and has wanted to teach horticulture. It was his aspiration to be able to help others learn not only about plants but help others learn about themselves and the world around them.

His favorite place—well, one of his favorite places is the Netherlands. He also loves to cook, trying new dishes and sharing them with friends and family. Other activities include gardening, birding, photography, tennis, racquetball, fishing, and spending time with friends and family.

Chad grew up in a small town in northwest Wisconsin, spending a lot of time fishing, hunting and gardening-for at least a few months of the year. In high school and most of college, Chad worked painting ornamental concrete lawn ornaments.

After residency, I immediately joined the faculty and remained there for 8 more years. At Tulane, I served as the Director of Student Programs for the Department of Medicine and Associate Program Director for the IM Residency.

Coaching Career

Coach Miller has made significant strides in women's soccer. In fall of 2023, Miller directed the Catamounts to their first SoCon Championship since 2008 defeating Samford 1-0 on their home field. Miller became the second WCU coach in program history to earn SoCon Coach of the Year honors.

Additionally, the 2024 Catamounts rolled to an undefeated Southern Conference record (their first such season in program history) while outscoring conference foes 23-1 in the regular season. Additionally, the Catamounts earned a program-record eight postseason conference honors as Ava Robitaille headlined the effort with the Defensive Player of the Year crown.

In the 2017 season, Miller steered the Catamounts to its best finish since returning to Western Carolina as the head coach. Western Carolina ended 2017 with a record of 9-10-2 in a magical run.

In 2010, Miller returned to Cullowhee and had one player placed on the All-Freshman Team; Brittany Gendron. During his first stop at WCU, Miller was the recruiting coordinator and was very involved in the academic oversight of the student-athletes and the fund-raising efforts for the Catamounts.

In 2009 Miller lead the Catawba women's soccer team to a finish ranked sixth in the Southeast Region. The Indians finished the season with a 13-5-2 record and were knocked out in the semifinal round of the South Atlantic Conference Tournament.

Miller guided his alma mater Pfeiffer University's women's soccer program for seven years starting in 1999. He led the Falcons to an overall record of 80-50-9 and 54-18-6 in conference play during his tenure.

Miller directed the Lady Falcons to three consecutive Carolinas-Virginia Athletic Conference (CVAC) tournament finals appearances and two regular-season titles where he was also named the CVAC "Coach of the Year," in 2000 and 2005.

He possesses 21 years of total coaching experience ranging from the high school and club levels to the collegiate ranks.

Isabella Demarco tied for with Marcil for the second-most points on the team with 25 as the standout junior posted nine assists and eight goals in the 2024 campaign.

She also garnered first-team all-conference honors along with Leane Trudel, Becca Campbell, Naya Marcill, Isabella DeMarco, and Milla Syska.

As a team, WCU scored their most points in a season since 2001 which included 44 goals (third-most in program history).

In the 2018 season, Miller navigated the team through crucial player injuries to help lead the Catamounts to a No. 4 seed in the Southern Conference Championships for the second-straight season. WCU dropped a tough match to No.

As the No. 4 seed in the SoCon Championships, Western Carolina notched shutouts over VMI and No. 1 seed Furman to reach the championship game against UNCG.

In 2016, WCU was the No. 7 seed and defeated No.

In 2014, Miller led the team to a sixth seed in the Southern Conference Championships before falling to No. 3 seed Mercer 2-1 in the quarterfinals.

In 2013, led the team to its first double-digit win season, 10 wins, since 2008 when the Catamounts amassed 13 victories.

During his tenure at Pfeiffer, the Falcons were honored five-straight seasons, from 2001-05, with the NSCAA & Adidas College Team Academic Award.

Miller also coached 36 All-CVAC players and 17 all-tournament acknowledgments, including three CVAC Players of the Year and one freshman of the year.

During his first stop at WCU, Miller was the recruiting coordinator and was very involved in the academic oversight of the student-athletes and the fund-raising efforts for the Catamounts. Personal Life

Miller was married to the former Stacey Radford in January of 2010 and they have two sons Thomas (17) and Carson (13).

Outside of work, Chad loves to travel and experience new cultures. He would really like to visit the African continent and go on safari, to see both the wildlife and flora. Cooking is another interest and Chad enjoys serving up a tasty dish now and then. Other activities include gardening, birding, photography, tennis, racquetball, fishing, and spending time with friends and family.
