John Michael Montgomery: The Life and Career of a Country Music Icon

John Michael Montgomery, an American country music singer, was born in Danville, Kentucky, on January 20, 1965. He has left an indelible mark on the country music scene. Raised in Garrard County, he developed an early interest in music, setting the stage for a successful career.

Early Life and Influences

Montgomery and his older brother, Eddie, were both inspired by their father, who performed in a local country band and taught his sons their first chords. By the time Montgomery was 15 years old, he began playing rhythm guitar in his family's band, Harold Montgomery and the Kentucky River Express, which his brother Eddie later joined as well.

Following their parents' divorce, Eddie and John Michael founded another group called Early Tymz, also known as John Michael Montgomery and Young Country, which had a regular performing gig at Austin City Saloon in Lexington, Kentucky.

Breakthrough Success

Montgomery began recording his debut album after signing with Atlantic Nashville. His first album, Life’s a Dance, came out in 1992 and was the only album to sell a million copies by a new artist that year. The title track “Life’s a Dance” charted at #4. The album's second single was "I Love the Way You Love Me". Written by Chuck Cannon and Victoria Shaw, the song became Montgomery's first number-one single on the country charts in 1993. The single “I Love the Way You Love Me” received the single of the year from the Academy of Country Music.

Chart-Topping Albums and Singles

Montgomery’s next endeavor was Kickin’ It Up in 1994. From this album came his first #1 single “I Swear”, which topped both the country and pop charts and made him a star. "I Swear" and "Sold" were ranked as the number-one songs on the Billboard Year-End charts for country music in 1994 and 1995, respectively.

In 1995, he released his self-titled album and had five hit singles including #1 hits, “I Can Love You Like That” and “Sold! (The Grundy County Auction Incident)”. The single “Sold! (The Grundy County Auction Incident)” won, Billboard’s Top Country Single, Billboard’s Music Awards Country Artist, and CMA Song of the Year.

He has had more than 30 singles on the Billboard Hot Country Songs charts. This total includes seven number-one singles: "I Love the Way You Love Me", "I Swear", "Be My Baby Tonight", "If You've Got Love", "I Can Love You Like That", "Sold (The Grundy County Auction Incident)", and "The Little Girl".

Several of Montgomery's singles crossed over to the Billboard Hot 100, his highest peak there having been achieved by "Letters from Home" in 2004.

Awards and Recognition

His second album won many awards: CMT #1 video of the year, CMA single of the year, and Country Radio Awards single of the year for “I Swear”. He won the CMA Horizon award and the ACM Top New Male Vocalist. He also won the American Music Awards Best New Country Artist and ACM Top New Male Vocalist. He also won Billboard’s top Country Male Artist and CMA Nomination for the Album of the Year.

In 1996 he was a Grammy nominee for Best Country Album for (John Michael Montgomery) and Best Male Vocal for (“ I Can Love You Like That”). ACM and TNN/Music City News nominated him for Video of the year For “SOLD! (The Grundy County Auction Incident)”.

Later Career

He has produced seven more albums, including a Greatest hits album which went Platinum and had a #4 single “Angel in My Eyes”. In 2000, Atlantic moved Montgomery to its parent label Warner Bros. Records after it closed in Nashville. In 2002, Montgomery’s first Warner Bros. release was Pictures, followed by Mr. Snowman in 2003 and a compilation entitled The Very Best of John Michael Montgomery. His last release with Warner Bros. was Letters From Home in 2004.

In late 2008, Montgomery founded his own label called Stringtown Records. His first album for his own label was then released titled Time Flies. His single “Forever” peaked the charts at #28.

Musical Style and Comparisons

Montgomery's musical style includes a mix of ballads and up-tempo country rock material, and he has seen mixed to positive critical reception. Many critics have compared his musical image and singing voice to those of Garth Brooks. "I Swear" and "I Can Love You Like That" were both covered by All-4-One, while "I Love the Way You Love Me" was covered by Boyzone.

Montgomery has released ten studio albums: seven through Atlantic Records Nashville, two via parent company Warner Records Nashville, and one on his own Stringtown label. His first three albums, Life's a Dance (1992), Kickin' It Up (1994), and John Michael Montgomery (1995) are all certified multi-platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA); 1996's What I Do the Best is certified platinum; while Leave a Mark (1998) and Brand New Me (2000) are certified gold.
