Chad Gable: From Olympic Dreams to WWE Stardom and the Origin of "Shoosh!"

Charles Edward "Chas" Betts (born March 8, 1986), better known as Chad Gable, is an American professional wrestler and former amateur wrestler currently signed to WWE, where he performs on the RAW brand. His journey from amateur wrestling to WWE stardom is marked by dedication, skill, and a unique personality that has captivated fans.

Amateur Wrestling Career

Gable's career began in amateur wrestling, where he achieved significant success. He was the 2004 Minnesota high school state champion and competed in the 2012 Summer Olympics in London in the Greco-Roman style 84kg event. He won against Keitani Graham from the Federated States of Micronesia in the qualification round.

Early Professional Wrestling Career

Under his real name, Betts debuted in his home state of Minnesota on October 26, 2003, in Midwest Pro Wrestling (MPW). His first match was against the reigning champion Casanova for the MPW Cruiserweight Championship. In 2005, Betts continued wrestling in his home state appearing in a single match for Northern Impact Wrestling (NIW), against Kid Krazy.

In November 2013, Betts announced that he had signed a contract with World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). He made his in-ring debut as Chad Gable at an NXT house show in Cocoa Beach, Florida on September 5, 2014 where he defeated Troy McClain.

NXT and American Alpha

Starting in May 2015, NXT newcomer Chad Gable began a storyline with Jason Jordan, in which he tried to convince Jordan to form a new partnership, following the dissolution of Jordan's team with Tye Dillinger. After nearly two months of coaxing, Jordan finally agreed to a tag team match with Gable as his teammate. On the July 15 episode of NXT, Jordan and Gable were successful in their official debut together against the team of Elias Samson and Steve Cutler. As the result, American Alpha was born, with the duo capturing the NXT Tag Team Championships before being drafted to SmackDown and winning the SmackDown Tag Team Championship.

On June 8 at NXT TakeOver: The End, American Alpha lost the title back to The Revival, ending their reign at 68 days. As a result of the 2016 WWE Draft on July 19, the team was drafted to the SmackDown brand, being their first tag team pick overall.

On the December 27 episode of SmackDown Live, they defeated Randy Orton and Luke Harper of The Wyatt Family, Heath Slater and Rhyno, and The Usos in a four corners elimination match to become the new SmackDown Tag Team Champions, celebrating with their families afterward.

Tag Team Success and Partnerships

In 2017, American Alpha disbanded after Jordan debuted on the Raw brand as the (kayfabe) son of Raw General Manager Kurt Angle, while Gable remained on SmackDown and teamed up with Shelton Benjamin. The new team won their debut match during the August 29th episode of SmackDown, defeating The Ascension (Konnor & Viktor). Gable and Benjamin quickly joined the tag team title picture, wrestling in their first title match on October 9 in a Four-Way against the defending tag team champions The Usos (Jey Uso & Jimmy Uso), along with challengers Breezango (Fandango & Tyler Breeze) and The New Day (Big E & Xavier Woods).

After the 2018 Superstar Shake-up, Gable was assigned to Raw. On the September 3 episode of Raw, Gable formed a tag team with Bobby Roode and went on to defeat The Ascension. In December 2018, Gable & Roode defeated team AOP in a title match to win the RAW Tag Team Champion for the first time in their WWE careers. With this win, he became the second man (after Jordan) to have won the NXT, SmackDown, and Raw Tag Team Championships.

"Shorty G" and Singles Competition

During the 2019 Superstar Shake-up, Gable was drafted to Smackdown, ending his team with Roode, and entered a feud with Baron Corbin, who managed to convince the announcers to shorten his name to "Shorty Gable" and eventually "Shorty G". After the 2019 Superstar Draft, Gable returned to the SmackDown Live brand. Gable made his in-ring return on the August 27 episode of SmackDown Live, featuring the return of the King Of The Ring Tournament. Gable advanced in the first round after eliminating Shelton Benjamin.

Alpha Academy and Recent Career

This name change lasted for about a year, until he declared he's had enough of being Shorty G and took the name "Chad Gable" back. A few weeks later he opened a wrestling training school "Alpha Academy", taking on Otis as his first trainee. In 2021, Gable and Otis were drafted to Raw, where they managed to capture Raw Tag Team Championships in a match against RK-Bro, dropping them back after 8 weeks.

In 2023, Otis managed to recruit Maxxine Dupri to Alpha Academy, with Akira Tozawa joining later that year. During this time, Gable entered a feud with the Intercontinental Champion Gunther and his stable the Imperium, facing off against the Ring General for the title several times, but without any success.

The "Shoosh!" Catchphrase: Origin and Impact

The "Shoosh!" catchphrase, now synonymous with Chad Gable, has an unexpected origin. Gable himself revealed that he "stole [it] from Pauly Shore’s movie Encino Man." He explained, "The bully, the high school jock bully, just said shoosh like 100 times in the movie and it was so funny. Like it was so annoyingly funny."

He'll never forget the first time I did it. We had this one night and I think COVID had kind of interrupted the plans because a bunch of people got sick, had to stay home, all this stuff. It was Detroit, if I remember right, and me and Otis were thrust into this promo seg to open the show. I don't know where it was, they're like, Well, you guys can walk and talk and do a promo tonight. I’m like I can say what? They're like whatever. I was like we were waiting for this. So I pulled out all these Pauly Shore references and these Always Sunny references, absurd stuff that I just liked. It was the first time I ever just did stuff that I liked because I had the chance. And lo and behold, the stuff I liked is what resonated with people and it was like this light bulb. The crazy thing is you get people that will tell you this, and it happens in all avenues of life. You get advice from people but it never really clicks until you just do it for once.

It was by accident as well. That was st... Charles Edward Betts (born March 8, 1986) is an American professional wrestler and former amateur wrestler. He has been signed to WWE since 2013 where he performs on the Raw brand under the ring name Chad Gable.

After failing to beat Gunther for the Intercontinental Championship made Gable sink into despair, while his friend Sami Zayn gained the opportunity to fight the Ring General at WrestleMania XL and asked Gable to train him. All the effort paid off, with Zayn winning the title, but a week after Gable failed to capture it and turned against Sami, attacking him in front of his family in an attempt to turn his fortunes around.

El Grande Americano

He also originally portrayed the masked luchador El Grande Americano until his injury. In early 2025, he began simultaneously portraying the masked luchador El Grande Americano. Under this persona, he would win his first singles championship, the WWE Speed Championship.
