Chad Belding: A Life Dedicated to the Outdoors

Born in 1974 in Reno, Nevada, Chad Belding is a lifelong sportsman and outdoors enthusiast. His love for the lifestyle was instilled at a very young age by his father, Orville Belding. Orville ensured that both Chad and his brothers Clint and Clay were encouraged to evolve an appreciation of the outdoors at every turn, teaching them to camp, hunt, fish, crawdad trap and even cut down their own Christmas trees.

Early Life and Education

Chad’s passion eventually led him to predator and waterfowl hunting, and he later became involved in competitive duck and goose calling while attending college at The University of Nevada Reno in the late 1990s. There he was also a member of the Division I baseball team and studied business, public speaking, and history.

Following his graduation with a Bachelor’s degree, he put his background in business to good use, co-owning and operating several businesses across Nevada, Colorado, and Washington.

Entrepreneurial Ventures

Chad’s relentless entrepreneurial spirit then led him to become the founder of “Banded Brands” in 2008. In that same year he originated The Fowl Life television series, also founded in 2008, which eventually went to air in 2009. The series has proven so popular that The Fowl Life continues to this day as one of the top waterfowl hunting shows on the Outdoor Channel.

Duck Calling Tips from Chad Belding

Professional duck hunter and former baseball player Chad Belding knows ducks. And as the owner of Jargon Game Calls, he’s the person you want to learn from when it comes to calling ducks. Belding shared with GearJunkie his tips for beginners who are interested in learning how to call ducks.

  1. When you start out, it’s very easy to form bad habits, and many people will tell you to go with a double-reed because of the ease of use.
  2. The same way you would defog a window is the same way you blow into a call. You can practice by pronouncing the word “hut.” Once you’ve got that down, don’t actually say the word.
  3. All the different sounds are based on a quack - simply push that clean, hot air you just learned into the call for a basic starting call.
  4. Now that you’ve mastered the quack, it’s time to layer your quacks to really imitate a duck. Think of it like echoing - one quack, followed by a second quack that is imitating the first but gentler, followed by a third, etc.
  5. Keep in mind that, traditionally, the feed call is the hardest call to master.
  6. There are no shortcuts when it comes to duck calling. The more you practice, the better caller you’ll be.
