Google just made an annoying update to the SHARE settings in Drive. This affects anyone who adds employees to top level folders, but needs to limit their access to certain folders below. Google made a very annoying update on September 22nd, 2025. And I'm not saying it's not a more secure update. It's just a little annoying because it removed a really handy feature when you wanted to remove somebody from a folder that existed inside of another folder.
In the past, it was so easy. Anytime you were moving somebody from a subfolder, you could click this button update item only and they would just be removed from either that file or just that folder. So check this out September 22nd and. Essentially says anytime you're removing somebody from a subfolder. It will remove them from the parent folder if you keep the standard settings of the folder. Now, they're doing this to improve the integrity of sharing subfolders, so it makes sense.
However, it would be really bad if they didn't offer an alternative or a fix. So here's the fix. They allowed you to create a setting called Limited Access Folder Settings.
How to Use Limited Access Folder Settings
So what this looks like is inside of a folder you can right click go into share for share. And then in the settings at the bottom, you can click on Limit Access to and that's their limited access setting. Once this is turned on, everybody's removed from the folder and only the owners left. There's going to be another tab open here with all the other users in your workspace, and then you can add them back to the folder.
Important Note: If you are going to turn this setting on, take note of who's there before you make the setting. Otherwise, you're going to have to try to remember who was there. Don't ask me. Now I know that the reason I'm noticing it now is because it really started to get enforced on October 8th. So there's nothing you need to do right now. It will be automatically applied. this is the single simplest description & fix for the google drive folder issue i've found so far. THANK YOU.

Additional Google Drive Tips
- Closing google sheet, doc or slide via browser tab does NOT delete the file from Google Drive. Always use move to trash from file menu if you want to delete your document.
- If you need to use Word or Excel and do not have the license on your personal device, just start a Google Drive account and use theirs. Most folks know this, but now we all know.
- A Google Business Profile suspension can feel like a door slamming shut. This isn’t punishment. If your listing goes down, don’t view it as a death sentence. It’s just a verification checkpoint.
