Finally, back on the boat Dylan attempts to set conspirators against each other by telling Darius that Jake has agreed to kill him for the diamonds. An Egypt Affair was shot entirely on location in Egypt, along the Nile between Luxor and Aswan. What truly works for this film is its choice of setting. Egypt provides a truly unique backdrop for the story. The sights and sounds along the Nile serve as a character in themselves, adding depth to the film. The cinematography is commensurately marvelous, especially when focusing on the architecture of the surrounding locales. Every shot has a tangible materiality to it, creating a wonderful degree of immersion for the viewer. Director Darrah (who also appears in the film, somewhat Hitchcockian as an Egyptologist) lays out his renowned, expansive and captivating local scenery for us.
Themes and Analysis
While its title suggests a focus on the affair between Dylan and Safiya, it delves into broader themes of crime and revenge, adding depth to the narrative. The film’s secret is in the title - Affair. A thesaurus declares it a word of innumerable meanings. Is it an entanglement, a liaison, or a crossroad.? Or does it refer to all those and more? Words can both enlighten. . .
The film explores the complexities of relationships, the allure of forbidden love, and the consequences of deception. As the stakes of the game at play in "An Egypt Affair" get raised along the way, the storyline also greatly increases in cost, and pretty soon, it's clear that things aren't what they seem, and Dylan is way over his head.
